How much do YOU think YOU need to retire? ...and at what age will you (and spouse) retire? (Part 1)

Great news, @DocT! Congrats!

ā€œToo busy with the election and the knot in one’s gut?ā€

Haha! I was feeling that knot last night. A facebook ā€œfriendā€ has politics much different from my own. Often, I have to tell myself to step away from the keyboard.

Congrats, DocT!

@doschicos, I have chosen to ā€œunfollowā€ a FB friend, who has been a friend of mine since high school (um, that’s much longer than a week ago). I won’t unfriend him, but I couldn’t stand watching any longer.

ā€œBusy doing taxes? Too busy with the election and the knot in one’s gut?ā€ Yes and yes.
Dh’s employer provides a tax service, but it still takes way too long to pull together everything they need. We’ll need to write another check shortly.

IxnayBob, we’re trying to get D1 to move some money into Vanguard’s TSM fund, but market drops make her nervous. I can’t believe how much she leaves in a MMA paying practically nothing when she has no short term need for the money. She may be ready to retire before dh.

Congrats to Doc T!

I admit to some jealousy of retired couples. Dh has bumped his retirement target date ahead again. He swears it’s not because of money and says he worries he will live as long as his father. The thought of being retired for 35+ years does not appeal to him. OTOH, when I suggest other ways to use his/our time instead of his work he then says he likes the money too much to retire now. I’m confident that he’d retire if I insisted, but I won’t do that.

Too busy having fun and making money. I’m on an all-day Skype call with a client (quick break for lunch and a previously scheduled client call). Fascinating issues. ShawWife and I biked for a few hours on Saturday in Marin and met a couple of writers for dinner in the city. Then yesterday, we kayaked to (and under) the Golden Gate Bridge, had lunch with a VC, and then I gave each of the kids a little bit of help on some things they had called about. Got to go downstairs and make myself a latte before several more hours of talking on Skype.

I assume taxes are getting done and the election is frightening.

I’m blowing off my taxes until October, and I feel like I must be in an alternate universe as far as the election goes. At least I’m hoping I am…

Retirement still seems far off, but congratulations to DocT!

Glad to hear your good news @docT ! The first day of the rest of your life…

I am working the election for the first time tomorrow (have to be there at 6 am, and work until 7 pm) - we have no early voting in our state other than absentee. Working the Precinct where I vote, and I do know a lot of people. Expect probably moderate turn out; the voting machines seem good so it should go smoothly. In our state, vote either Democrat, Republican, or Amendments only.

There is a job I am applying for that is promising (I do know someone in the org’n). I challenged myself last week (RN continuing education units) and took a two day trauma certification course (it had a 350 page manual). Written test and demonstration.

I would like to either have both feet on the dock or both feet in the boat. Have been living with one foot on the dock and one foot in the boat.

If I don’t go back to work, I will be cashing out some small insurance policies to start sprucing up out home to downsize. I am not giving up on the job search yet…trying to return after years raising kids and later also fighting stage III cancer (and successfully winning at both).

One of the kids is scheduled to graduate college in a couple of months, and the other will be working an internship in her field this summer. We are looking forward to the older one being done, done, and done (degree, license, and job) - waiting for the fat lady to sing.

H has 5.5 more years to work, but I wonder if he might want to consult some. I won’t talk about that until we get closer. I think he can set some hours and make some decent money, as his company has no one with his total set of skills, and all the global presidents know him on a first name basis. I think H will realize he will have the time off and a lot less stress, plus enjoy raising the nest egg total.

Congrats, DocT!

Taxes are done as much as possible - still waiting on one state tax credit approval before we file. Could file Federal now but will probably do both at once. Watching stock market gyrations with unhealthy level of interest - we both will have pensions and SS, so it doesn’t matter as much as it otherwise might. But after a few decades of savings, the absolute dollar value changes in the accounts on a good or bad day can be jarring. In the crash of 1989 we didn’t have much to gain or lose anyway.

Watching primary process with horror. Reminded DD to register to vote in her new state.

Congrats DocT.

I’ve been thinking about what to do in a negative interest rate environment.

I was away on a sister trip and up to my eyeballs at work.

Hubby continually teases me and my saving ways. I did tell him many spouses would be thrilled to have such an issue. We have an agreement that when the checking account balance gets over a certain amount we put the extra in a money market…when the money market goes over a certain threshold I add it to the next cd. Trust me it’s plenty of money to live on, by no means do I leave us anywhere near short. I believe we just save more this way.

ā€œwe’re trying to get D1 to move some money into Vanguard’s TSM fund, but market drops make her nervous.ā€
Sounds like the best time to invest, right? Take advantage of the downdraft? Maybe encourage her to move her money in increments. Nice though that she is doing well and has a saving mindset!

I might deviate on a point or two in this, but good solid advice, especially for our young adult children starting down the earning, and hopefully saving, path.

Congrats Doct.

@shawbridge, ok. What’s your thinking?

I don’t think interest rate will go negative…

Congrats DocT!

they wont go negative- not in the US.

Congrats Doc T !

Congratudolences DocT. It will be the best of times; it will be the worst of times. All that aside, enjoy it!
