How much is your trash bill?

Former residence in Oakland,CA- $72/mo with weekly garbage (64 gallon), recycle (64 gallon) and garden cuttings (64 gallon) pick up and 1 annual p/u of bulky garbage.
Current residence has water/garbage included in HOA. Hopes this info helps.

I had no idea people had trash pick up twice a week!

No town trash pickup. Private carrier is $70/quarter. They take anything, and we have a lot! No complaints. Worth every penny. I am also glad we can burn. I can’t imagine living on a farm and having acres to maintain, and not being able to burn.

We have a septic, but the tinsy town (population 300) where we have 3 rentals made everyone join the new sewer system awhile back. $2000 install fee, plus $50/ month, whether 1 person or 10 lives in the house. Water is well, so this is not included.

No recycling, although we can sort and haul it ourselves to bins at the nearby school.

My property taxes are about 2500 for the year… which I think is pretty good. Other areas around here are a bit more. My water bill is separate, usually it’s about 15-20 dollars per quarter.

My township has the trash service contracted with WM.

Trash is included in our taxes. They pick it up twice a week, recycling once a week. Electronics they’ll pick up monthly. And appliances will get picked up if you call. They also pick up leaves in the fall and I think they do yard waste once a week when it’s not leaf season. (I don’t know since we compost.) No sewer bill either.

They started charging us last year for garbage, and I swear the mayor will lose his office as a result. It is $10.00 a month for garbage and recycling.

Toblin-
$11000 property taxes, yikes!

We are in northern NJ and I thought (and still do think)that our $9600 is bad.

Where do you people live? Sounds like I have really high property taxes for a modest home, high garbage, high water and sewer? Don’t even get me started on gas or electric. Zero public transportion and if we’re really lucky they’ll clear the snow off the highways in the winter. I have an average size home in an average little town. And I’m supposedly in low cost fly-over land? Maybe they really don’t need to adjust for cost of living on the FAFSA or we need to move south to Indiana :-)

momof, My house is about 1600 sq foot not counting my garage and I have about 1/3rd of an acre (I think). I’m in Pennsylvania. My prop taxes are about 2500 a yr, sewer 47 every quarter, trash 78 every quarter, and water usually like i said about 20 a quarter (however it’s just me in the house, i’m sure that would be more if i was the mom of three boys!!) I don’t have gas but I just ordered about 900 dollars of oil the other week… Hopefully that will last all winter. It’s so expensive these days!! My recent electric bill was 60 dollars however that is more in the summer when i’m running my central air.

I also had no idea trash got picked up twice a week anywhere! We live in So. Cal. near LA. We pay about $84/month for water/sewer and trash. They provide 3 cans on rollers: trash, recycle, and yard waste. Trash and yard waste get picked up once a week and recycle is every other week. We barely have any trash, maybe 1/4 of a can- not even enough to put out some weeks. Most of ours goes to recycle or to composting. Furniture or other large items can be put out twice a year free, but other than that there is an extra charge. We are on water rationing and can only water our lawn MWF before 8AM and after 6PM. We have had a lot of rain and snow in the mountains this year so that may change. There is a hazardous waste collection about 6 times per year at City Hall for paint, chemicals, and electronics, etc.

We haved lived in many states, and 2x per week trash seems common in the South. Maybe just so the smell isn’t overpowering!
We get twice a week trash, once a week recycling, and the trash people will take anything we set out (unlike some cities). We don’t have access to a dump, but it’s generally known that if you set usable stuff out the night before, most of it is gone before the trash trucks get there in the morning.

How on earth can folks go 2 weeks on recycling with a family? We have one of those big bins on wheels and fill it weekly. Our recycling takes everything in one bin, so it’s always twice as full as the garbage one.

I have a 2,200 square ft old home and a lot that gets counted in feet - the dog lead goes from the door to the end of the yard…over $6000 a year in property taxes :frowning: I just wrote checks today for the winter tax and the water bill and the garbage bill so I’m feeling blue. Michigan is not a healthy place these days…the colleges are expensive, the cost of living is expensive unless you want to live in certain areas on the east side, there are no jobs and the state is broke. Wonderful. Could be California with snow but their colleges are still cheap.

We pay $37.10 bimonthly for waste removal. Private companies provide garbage and recycling pickup here. The city has divided up the region so one garbage company serves each area. We use the smallest available garbage cart, which is 20 gallons. The garbage goes to a garbage burner, which generates electrical power. We also have a recycling cart for mixed paper, plastic containers, cans and small scrap metal. There is also a basket for recycling glass bottles, used motor oil, batteries, paint and cooking oil. We also have a yard waste container where we can put grass clippings, organic yard waste, food waste, greasy pizza boxes, coffee grounds, etc. The yard waste container goes to a recycling center to be turned into compost. Garbage and yard waste is picked up weekly, other recycling is biweekly. We’re rather environmentally conscious here in Salem  Our sewer and storm water rates are $40.81/month. Ouch.

We live in an unincorporated area of our county, so property taxes are low and services even lower. Waste Mgt. charges $35/quarter to pick up one cart once a week. They just started recycling a few months ago for $5/mo. per bin. There’s an extra charge for yard trash (leaves must be bagged, limbs can’t exceed 3’) or items that won’t fit in their cart.

Sewer service is billed by (but not provided by) the water utility of the nearby city. Our sewer charges are more than our water charges. Last month we didn’t run the sprinklers so the total bill was just under $100, with nearly $60 of that going for the sewer service.

Mine is $27/mo through a private hauler, including unlimited cans/bags/recyclables. He’ll take big stuff too but that needs to be arranged in advance, but definitely no leaf sucking services! No water/sewer as we’re in the country.

We pay a private hauler $17/month to pick up our trash (two medium-size cans) once a week. But he doesn’t recycle, so I must sort our recyclables and take them to the recyling center myself, which I do once a month. I read the newspaper online, and have cancelled all catalogs, which has cut down on the junk I need to haul.

I negotiate a separate price with the trash guy if I have something really big that needs to be taken away, like a sofa.

I compost leaves and use them in my garden.

We live in the country and our water comes from a well. Every so often we have to pay to have the pump fixed.

We pay about $20 monthly for every other week pick up of trash & recycle. My DH keeps threatening to cancel and make trips to the dump, but we really have no where to store it.

Septic, no sewer, though the nearest city has had some serious rebuilding issues and it was about $45/mo 10 years ago; I hear it is now close to $100/mo for sewer!

$43 every other month for garbage and recycling pickup once a week
Anywhere from $100-125 a month for water and sewer combined. We don’t have a trophy lawn, just live in the SF Bay Area, where everything, even the water, is more expensive.

We pay $87 every three months for trash pick-up twice a week and re-cycling once every two weeks. You can put out as much re-cycling as you want and it is mandatory. If they find recycling in your regular trash (different pick-up day) they will leave it at the curb. Our area does private trash haulers but there is no near-by dump so it’s pretty competitive. We have a landfill though just for yard waste (DIY) but we take things like our Christmas tree to our neighbors whose secretary has a goat! Large things, like sofa’s or appliances are a separate $25 pick-up. We all like our trash guys and it’s not uncommon to give them cookies at Christmas or a six-pack on hot summer days.

We have public sewer and a private well. I think the sewer is $119 for three months.

We pay yearly: $300 for once a week trash pickup (up to three cans) and recycling every other week. Our last yearly sewer bill was $265; we get a separate water bill, which varies between $35 and $75 a month depending on whether or not there are kids at home.
