Just want to offer virtual hugs and support. You sound like a fantastic mom!
I would contact the school also. They often work with psychologists who are very experienced with teens and be ableto recommend someone. I don’t know how you found the therapist but it is very important to have someone who really understands teens and the situation.
I personally would skip the trip. If he’s been keeping it under wraps for so long and finally decided to confess it, I think it would mean that his actions are scaring even him.
Has he been tested by a psychologist (they have written tests) for depression? Kids are incredibly good at telling parents what they want to hear. I just wouldn’t trust any promise of behavior change very soon. It takes time.
I know you don’t want to invade his privacy by telling friends or family but you’ll go nuts with no one to confide in. It’s a big thing. You need someone closer than us to bounce things off of and give off some steam.
I’d try to gently find out from your son who already is aware of it–probably his friends, maybe the school, perhaps even another family member if there is someone close. There is a good chance someone encouraged him to tell you about it so he could get help.
Just like on this forum you’ll be surprised to find sympathetic ears and experience among your trusted friends and maybe some other good advice.
