"How not to act old"

*I keep reminding my kids that the members of REM and U2 are around my age range, not theirs./i

That’s outstanding! Were you there? I’ve been youtubing REM since I saw them Saturday, and caught a few Stipe/Vedder duets. They sing beautifully together (fun to watch, too.)

Sue–If anything my kids listen to gets called “Classic Rock” they may stop listening to it. Seriously, I think a good part of what gets played on Classic Rock stations is dated and cringeworthy. Though I do like what could be called “classic alternative.” (there’s a contradiction in terms.)

I find it disconcerting to turn on a radio and hear nothing that I didn’t hear my senior year in high school. For me, part of the whole value of pop music is its constant novelty.

My kids and their friends – who are all fairly serious alt music types – have all done some time in the “classic alternative” mode. My daughter had a lot of Velvet Underground and Nico CDs (together and separately – who remembered that Jackson Browne’s first big break was writing and playing on Nico’s first solo record?), and MC5. And then there’s The Smiths – my daughter and a friend once published an essay which took off from how much they appreciated hearing The Smiths on the radio when their iPod batteries ran out. The friend – the absolute prototype of a hipster – at one point was refusing to listen to anything recorded after she was born.

But my daughter has always listened to Bruce Springsteen in secret. It’s perhaps the single most un-hip thing she does. Paul Simon, too.

We recently had a conversation about how much she’s been liking The Hold Steady. I said, “Of course. It’s like listening to Bruce Springsteen – all that blue-collar romantic narrative and classic bar rock – but you can do it in public.” “Exactly.”

My last office was one block from the transmitter for the region’s most powerful classic rock station, and my computer speakers picked up the signal a lot of the time (even if they were off). Involuntarily, I had to listen (at low, but clearly audible volume) for up to 12 hour a day. It was unbearable. I never want to hear “Kashmir” again.

JHS–My kids, especially my S, will admit to liking Springsteen. I hate to categorize him as “classic rock” since he’s still doing new albums with up to date sounds, plus, he frequently appears with bands with more “alt” cred.

(I could do without Kashmir, too, though newer stuff Plant’s doing is really, really interesting.)

I think how you dress really foretells the age group that you are in. Anybody wearing a belt with their shorts and wearing white tube socks with tennis shoes shows that you are out of touch. Also, if you are tucking in your t-shirt shows that you have no clue. T-shirts from concerts in the '80’s is another dead giveaway. At some point you then graduate to the next level of bad attire. This is when you get over 70 and you go with the suspenders and jumpsuits. Also, a trip to Denny’s or the local cafe for the early bird special will mean you must wear your Members Only jacket with the epilets.

I will always refuse to wear those t-shirts with the “Old Guys Rule” logo. How pathetic can you be.

quote

What are you guys TALKING about? Garland, are you showing off?

Maybe I got confused with all that White Noise from my Refrigerator.

I got mocked by my daughter for admitting that I liked the Plant/Krause CD.

Then there’s Vampire Weekend. My daughter played me their stuff last October because she thought I would like it (as I did), but she was completely unprepared for it becoming her mother’s favorite CD in the world this spring. And high school girls were excited about it, too. It caused a huge dilemma. How could she possibly like something that suburban 15-year-olds AND her mother liked?

Kashmir–frequently played Led Zeppelin song from the 70s. robert Plant: lead singer from Zep, now doing Americana style music with singers like Alison Krause (she’s well known from the O Brother How Art Thou soundtrack.)

Sorry, P3T, I’m getting my own thread OT.

^^No, no, it’s helpful! I need something to say to impress S-2 at dinner tonight, IF we have dinner tonight. It won’t help but he’ll appreciate the effort. Young people like it when old people try to do our best. What more can they ask of us? :)

It’s a losing battle. One of my twin nieces who is about to turn 17 wants to be a band promoter. Several years ago, my D made a point of making sure her cousins were educated in good music and frequently sent them links and mix CDs. (No Jonas Brothers for them!).

Now, she’s turning to her teenage cousin to find out what’s the latest.

garland " keep reminding my kids that the members of REM and U2 are around my age range, not theirs." LOL, that’s true.

My 16 yo son said to me a while back, handing me an ipod ‘ear bud’ – “Listen to this cool song.” It was ‘Stairway to Heaven.’ I said, “That would be great if it weren’t the 3,000th time I’ve heard it since I was 14…!!”

If you have a six cd changer in your car, what are the cd’s you currently have in the mix.

I currently have

Once- Soundtrack
Coldplay- Viva La Vida
Death Cab for Cutie- Narrow Stairs
Jack Johnson- Sleep Through the Static
Plant & Krause- Raising Sand
Bright Eyes- Cassadaga

Single CD player, but the current top played are:

Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros–Streetcore
Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros–Global a GoGo
REM–Acceleration
REM–Life’s Rich Pageant
Spearhead–Yell Fire
Springsteen–Magic

Kronos Quartet’s Cusp of Magic. My 19 years old daughter definitely wants me to switch back to Bach.

PS. It’s got wonderful pipa playing.

CDs currently onboard are several mixed ones I compiled, Apocalyptica, a Classical Guitar CD ico road rage, and a really obscure Tom Petty from the boxed set.

The mixed CDs include some classic stuff along w/ Buckethead, Joe Satriani, Jump Little Children, Buckcherry, two Italian artists named Raf & Elisa, and lots of Soundgarden & Audioslave (I love Chris Cornell!).

You might be able to tell that we have a great affinity for good guitar. With 3 great players in the house as well as a drummer, it’s all music all the time around here. Our kids love Zeppelin, Van Halen, Metallica, Hendrix, ACDC, Pink Floyd, The Eagles, Beatles & all those other old f****s. By the same token, they’ve turned us on to lots of the new stuff. It’s a two-way street of mutual acceptance! Yay!

I must admit - when I was really young, I didn’t appreciate Zepplin as much as I do now. What a freaking GENIUS Jimmy Page is!! Glad I’ve lived long enough to understand!

I’m actually listening to my iPod, and when I started reading I was listening to Eminem, now it’s Gogol Bordello.

Other ‘old’ music stories… my husband and I went to see a band a few years ago. When the lead-in band started, he and I were down in the front dancing around. After the main band started, I finally decided I wanted to go sit down. So we turned to go sit (and give up our GREAT spot near the stage) and I heard a kid say “who invited THEM to come?” I cracked up.

Last year for mothers day my kids got tickets for H and I to go see one of my favorite bands. When we were off on the side getting water, one of the bouncers asked how many kids had ‘dragged us there’. You should have seen the look when I told him that the kids were at home, and had gotten us the tickets as a gift…

I’m looking at Slash off to the side, anyone else? Now HE’s a hairy guy.

OUCH!!

Dontcha just hate those darn reality checks!

Do you know that the kids graduating from college now weren’t even BORN when we STARTED college? (Assuming you’re a parent like me).

“Fall to Pieces” by VR is on one of my compilations. Good tune.

Ah, but my husband and I got the last laugh… after the show when they were all piling into cars for the long, long ride home, we were walking up the street to a nice B&B.
