How often do you watch your old videos?

Years ago we bought a VHS to DVD converter but I never finished the job.

The many companies that will convert old movies are really expensive if you have a hundred or more tapes!

This spring I found a neighborhood teen who runs her own company, converting to digital - both DVD and cloud - for a very reasonable price. We completed that process over the summer and autumn. We have both DVDs and a hard drive full and I am relieved.

Some of the older tapes had started to disintigrate. We were just in time.

We have loved watching and sharing very old family videos from the early 1980’s, which was long before we had children - of people long gone, of ourselves and our siblings - on through about 2011 when we went digitsl.

That transfer process had been weighing on me for a decade. I’m so happy we rescued those old memories before they completely disintigrated.

Can anyone recommend a VCR tape to DVD or flash drive transfer system that includes a VCR player? We do have an old player but I don’t want to tie it up all winter transferring. But I would like to protect the videos that include DS and my departed parents.

I don’t watch old tapes but do periodically go into the dozen albums to look up old pictures!

I transferred mine to DVD through a company (with a Groupon, I think) a number of years ago, but haven’t watched them like I thought I would. The one I watched was almost like seeing ghosts and got me so nostalgic. The best part of the DVD I chose to watch had a random scene of my nephew, now 21, trying on a princess dress in my D’s dress up clothes box about 18 years and spinning around saying he was a princess. He’s now threatening to destroy it next time he visits.

But this thread is making me think that next week, the 20th anniversary of adopting my D, I’ll dig out that DVD, where seeing me for the first time, she stretches out her little arms and says Mama.

^^Awww. Please let us know if you need a shoulder or two as you fall into your sweet puddle of tears, @Barbalot.

@Barbalot , I know what you mean about seeing ghosts. I see my kids, “why, there they are”, then I look at them now. It’s like I have 2 separate families and relationships. It’s weird.

@conmama That’s it exactly. I look at photos/videos of my D when she was small and think, “I haven’t seen her in so long,” almost as if she was a whole separate person.

H had all the old vhs tapes transferred to DVD’s of our Ds when they were young. We haven’t watched them for a long time. After reading this you are all making me very sentimental so I think I may just pull these out tonight and watch some!

I have made so many videos since my boys’ births that I decided to create an edited, “From Birth to First 10 Years,” starting with the ultrasound videos and ending with their 10th birthday celebrations. This thread reminds me to do the same for the next decade. I’ve also done the same with my photo collections except on an annual basis, creating a video with the best family moments throughout the year. I watch the latter more so than the former.
