How safe or unsafe is Mexico City?

oldfort,
I think they got a ridiculously cheap rate at the Best Western when they booked, much cheaper than what is showing online now. My son says they will be taking an “authorized” taxi from the airport to the hotel. I guess I will be holding my breath for a number of days…

oldfort,

I should clarify that I didn’t take a local/city bus in MC, just a nice charter bus originating in Xalapa, Veracruz. I think it left around midnight and we arrived around 5 AM - ugh, not much sleep on that trip!

Whether it’s right or not, I think being a male is always an advantage for security when traveling in a foreign country. Also, I speak a pretty good amount of Mexican Spanish (there is an immense amount of slang in Mexico), so I wasn’t afraid of taking a wrong turn in the city and being completely lost/afraid because I knew I could have easily asked for directions and gotten back on course. Though MC is a very fast-paced city, a good part of its residents will be willing to help you if you are nice and approach them in espa

3togo: You said yourself you went 15 years ago. Things have changed quite a bit since then.

Thanks for the advice from all. My daughter will only be in Mexico City for one day on business. She will need a cab from the airport to the hotel, hotel to her meeting, back to the hotel, and then returning to the airport. Her company does allow car services, but she has requested that in MC they allow her to use one. If not, she will have the hotel call for her cab.

Actually, it might be that her male traveling partner may not be going after all, so she has the option to not go also. She feels this client needs to be seen as the last person with this territory never wanted to go to MC. As my daughter speaks fluent Spanish, she really wants to make this meeting and meet with the client. If she does still go, she is actually going to change her hotel as she was staying at the Hilton Mexico City Reforma as that is where the other person had booked. She was booked at the W, but decided she would rather be at the same hotel since they would travel together. She has a larger budget than the other guy, so wanted to stay in a better hotel for MC!!
