<p>I have 2 kids, one graduated from an Ivy and another attending one. Both played their respective instruments in college. Ivys encourage participation, but it is up to the student to balance ECs and studies. </p>
<p>I personally think my oldest majored in ECs and minored in physics. Jury still out on the youngest.</p>
