How to block telemarketing calls?

We gave up our landline about 18-24 months ago and ported our old home number to a cell phone. The model of cell phone we have allows phone numbers to be put on the reject list, which will prevent calls from blocked numbers from ringing.

It really seems as though most calls coming in to our “home phone” are robocalls from telemarketers.

i apologize - I just meant that just because a 1-800 number is calling doesn’t automatically mean it’s a telemarketer.

I do know I have blocked various numbers on verizons website - I don’t remember if you could block a 1-800 number or not. Recently someone tried to put in a quote for auto insurance at some site online that farms your number out to all of the different companies… they must have made a typo because I got constant calls for over a week. I had to tell each company to remove this number individually.

It’s not much of a solution, but I simply put the phone down without hanging up. This way I use up more of the robocallers resources. I probably don’t cost them that much money, but it’s something.

I tell them I’m not allowed to give my phone number to strangers.

I see your point, fendergirl. I am not hoping to block all 800 numbers, only the ones from robocallers and telemarketers. Verizon claims that it is not able to block any 800 numbers.

I work in a small office and we receive telemarketer call all the time. I also use the method of simply putting down the phone on the desk and letting the caller deliver their entire pitch. They never call back. If you hang up instead, your number simply goes back in the queu (sp?)!

FYI- be sure to renew your number on the dnc list every five years or it will drop off. You can also remind a caller that there is a $10,000 fine per CALL!

Please don’t give out your childhood phone number - someone else has most likely had this number assigned, and now they’re getting your phone calls.

We had this happen after we moved into our new home. When a newpaper delivery called to confirm service, we asked for the address, and wrote a note asking them not to use this number anymore. And the calls did stop.

You do need to renew the DNC list periodically, so you should check your number is still on it.

This morning I get a call from a number that I have seen before on caller ID, although I have never answered. When I pick up the phone there is some recording in another language that I couldn’t figure out. I waited to see if it would switch to English, but when the spiel was don’t, the phone disconnected.

This was a new one in all the calls I get!
