I disagree with this. I think they’re saying the first in line to pay for college are the parents. What’s the alternative? Parents refuse to pay so the school picks up the tab?
I don’t think this is as much of a problem for students with low income parents as it is for those who have at least one upper income parent. The problem seems to come up in situations where one parent can pay something but won’t.
The college may very well want you but there is a difference between wanting the student and offering more needs based aid just because a divorced parent won’t cooperate. It also sounds like the parent will cooperate but OP doesn’t want them to fill out the form. I’m thinking OP is assuming they will get less need based aid with the NCP information and wants to find a way around it without a “real” reason.
@123Mom456 That’s quite a conclusion to jump to haha I still don’t know if the NCP will or won’t cooperate, we’re still trying to figure that out. If they do cooperate that would actually be great because then we could work from there, but as of now it’s a little unsure whether progress will be made
@thumper1 yes definitely! I’ve been accepted into FAFSA only schools also but I just want to keep my options open and some of the options are CSS Profile schools, although it’s looking like those might not be options depending on how this all pans out
@austinmshauri I can see both sides but I’m still unsure
Unsure of what? Colleges are a business. If they just handed out aid when in fact there are parents with money who just refused to fill out the forms, they would go out of business in a hurry.
You need to confirm with each college whether they need an NCP form or if you need to file a waiver. Don’t wait until they come to you. Almost every CSS profile school does. A few schools have their own forms. Check the websites, and call the FA office if you aren’t sure.

I counted about 80 Profile schools that do NOT require the non-custodial parent form.
Most of them that come close to meeting need have their own form. I just checked a few – Bucknell, William & Mary, Wooster asks for some info on another form, etc. Didn’t keep going, but the schools you have heard of mostly do ask for something regarding NCP income.
