<p>I’m waiting for the Earth Day state rebate program later this month. Supposedly the stores will have sales also. I like GE CleanSteel to reduce fingerprints but now I will look at Consumer Reports to make sure it’s not a lemon.</p>
<p>Very timely discussion for me. My 26 year-old fridge also gave out yesterday and I too have tight space constraints so can’t consider anything too large. Thanks for reminding me of the website, Garden Web. I’ll check it out.</p>
<p>We bought the cheapest thing at Sears 21 years ago. Still works just fine. No ice maker, very simple design. I’m sure that they sold a zillion of them so spare parts should be no problem if we ever need them. It’s an old freon model so efficiency shouldn’t be too bad compared to the models sold today. Might even be similar.</p>
<p>I just cleaned the thing out (vacuum cleaner over the coils). There are some areas that I couldn’t reach - I wonder if there’s a special flat attachment.</p>
<p>If only we could buy a refrigerator, washer, etc just like the ones we bought 25 years ago! I understand that the our energy costs will be much lower with a new one. That’s a good thing for all of us. BUT, if these new appliances last only 1/2 as long as the old ones than we certainly haven’t done much for the landfill situation. Yes, some parts can be recycled but what have really saved?</p>
<p>^^That’s how I feel about water restricted toilets that have to be flushed two (at least) times. What’s the savings?</p>
<p>^^Don’t get me started about water restricted toilets. DH is renovating our master bath right now and we are seriously contemplating leaving the old toilet in place (despite its outdated color) because we hate the new one we’ve got in the powder room.</p>
<p>My 3 year old Amana, bottom freezer has needed a compressor replacement twice already. Each failure cost me $90 for the “diagnosis” house call and I’ve waited a month for the replacement to arrive. Last time was Thanksgiving until New Years. The warranty expired on April 1. Yep, I was a fool to buy it.</p>

<p>A coworker built an expensive home many years ago. He had the prerequisite low-flush toilets installed, drove to Canada, picked up some not-low-flush toilets and installed them in his new home.</p>
<p>My next refrigerator will be a Whirlpool. My GE fridge started rusting by the door handle about a year after we got it.</p>
<p>My sister got the bottom freezer, french door top and does not like it. Think about how you use the freezer before you get one. Things get too buried in the back for her. She thought she would like the open top but does not keep the shelves at the same distance and does not use it often. It is a hassle to open both doors any time she wants something big. She misses some of her refrigerator door shelf space, too. She wishes she had her side by side and she has had this for over a year.</p>
<p>A good friend of mine has had the french door one for a couple of years and just loves it. She just wishes the new ones with the 2 sliding freezer drawers had been available when she bought it.</p>
<p>With the price of refrigerators :eek: I just hope my 21+ year old GE lasts a few more years. It has a couple of things I really like that I don’t see on any new ones and would really miss (a little outside door and shelf for milk, and a sliding shelf that hangs under a main shelf and holds 5 microwaveable storage containers that slide into it).</p>
