<p>Are you OOS? It would be hard for UK to support offering extra merit $ to an OOS student with the funding issues for schools.</p>

<p>Public universities typically do not meet full need of accepted students (with a couple of notable exceptions…UVA and UNC-CH). Most of their need based financial aid comes in the form of federally funded aid (Pell grant…max $5500, Stafford Loan $5500, sometimes SEOG if the student qualifies, Perkins loans, and work study). Even IF your son got the MAXIMUM need based aid from an OOS public, it would not come close to covering the costs.</p>
<p>Some schools do award merit money to top applicants from out of state (Alabama, U of South Carolina, for example). This merit aid is not available at all schools…just some.</p>
<p>In most cases, OOS aid will not cover the DIFFERENCE between the cost of instate and OOS costs of attendance.</p>
