How to get help for my dad - patient advocate?

They put Dad in a regular hospital room yesterday.

Apparently, the hospital’s social worker was willing to release information only to the family, even though my father told her directly that the advocate was to be kept in the loop. SW did speak to the advocate, but didn’t even give her her direct phone number. It took me about 30 minutes just to locate the SW by phone. I was very polite but told her in no uncertain terms that we expect the advocate to be involved in the process. Geez, it gets exhausting.

I was scheduled to be in Austin May 29 through June 3, for my nephew’s high school graduation. But Sis has to be out of town for two weeks, beginning June 1, for a work obligation she just can’t avoid (this is the first time she’s had anything like this during her 30+ year teaching career). So I will extend my stay until June 13. It’s going to be tough to pull off, because I will still have to get work done. But you do what you have to do! It’s kind of a perfect storm, because my uncle would normally be able to help out, but his granddaughter, whom he adopted, is expecting a baby any day and he will be out of town helping her.

Figures this would happen in JUNE, when the weather in Maine will be glorious. I moved away from Texas because I don’t do well in heat. Thanks for listening to me whine, ha.

Oh, one additional benefit to my stay will be spending time with Mom, who sounds pretty down. A visiting nurse feels that she’s depressed, and I think that was an astute observation. We thought she was having memory issues, but I think it’s actually been a lack of caring about anything for about the past three years, since we lost my nephew. We’re going to try to get her some help, too.

^^^^Also be aware that for some reason, clinical depression is extremely common in patients who have recently undergone open heart surgery, so your Dad is also at risk for that.

@Nrdsb4, thanks for that info. I can certainly understand why! But it’s good to keep in mind for Dad - I wouldn’t have thought about it, because he’s always been happy and enthusiastic about everything.
