how much does eagle scout count if you’re an asian as opposed to white and you don’t live in the state of california or new york?
What do u guys think of this EC
Ive invested in the stock market, i helped my dad earn about
$8,000. I also made 100 dollars myself. Would this look good on a college resume?
It’ll look fine. Not necessarily impressive, but you should just put it down. Same with davezhan.
davezhan: I did not realize eagle scout counted differently for different people. I don’t think it does. I think involvement in math/sci would because if one is asian, they are stereotypically excellent at it (even though they may not be. If asians are good at humanities, that may look good for them).
well, thanks dchow, but no need for the condescension. although i noticed that on the common app, it does seem a rather odd thing to do, just because you can’t say how many hours you’re going to do a week, etc. also, it seems really redundant since you haven’t done it yet. and there is some scope for doubt, seeing as you can’t know everything you’re going to be doing.
so if i say, i’m going to perform in the school talent show, i might not actually end up doing it. so which ones to put and which ones not to?
i’m kind of sick of (some) people on these boards snubbing people who ask honest questions. some doubt is totally legitimate, and if people want clarification, this is the board to do it on. also, many of these questions have a very logical answer, and some are asked with the expectancy of a more detailed response, so instead of asking if something is done, they are really asking why and how and to what degree it is done.
that being said… i have more q’s. how much detail is too much detail for a resume? for example, should i list all of my published work if i am applying to a journalism school? should i include all of my performances if i’m applying to a music school?
this is my list of extra curriculars which i don’t know if i’m writing about or not. i’m thinking of doing a detailed resume that explains them, but not write about them in my essay… i know that’s a little heretic for this board, but i really want to show them who i am as a writer, and i don’t think it would work so well if i was writing about what i was doing. some essay ideas touch a little on my music extra curriculars, but not all of the other ones that i find to be extremely important to me… i’m just hoping that my list will show that i care.
i sort of just want some guidelines about what i should and should not include.
all include senior year, unless otherwise noted.

thanks for reading this, i really appreciate it.
Bears54, i think it’s your extra curriculars are fantastic, but it’s all in how you talk about them i guess, so make sure they know you love them.
Just wondering,
How does it look to the adcom’s if I paid for 3 years of private high school fees through my own initiative in the stock market?
I’ve been a huge CNN and CNBC fanatic and economics has been a huge interest of mine for ages. I’ve also done mock investments for years and small scaled investments for the last 3-4 years and I’m confident that I can earn enough to pay for school.
Shore, I’m sure the adcom’s would be very impressed by your interest of economics. If you write about it in your essay, and demonstrate some other EC’s, colleges will see it as something that makes you unique from the other thousands of applicants
“How does it look to the adcom’s if I paid for 3 years of private high school fees through my own initiative in the stock market?”
I find this very impressive. Private schools are what, $10,000+ a year? How much did you start out with?
How do just 3 varsity sports look. Im a rising junior and the only EC’s i have are 3 sports. Im also pretty good at them and probably good enough to get recruted at D3 or some D2 schools but not D1 so i wont be applying to colleges as a recruited athlete. Its basically impossible to be in sports and clubs in my school at the same time so thats why i havent been able to join any. I love sports and i plan to write one of my essays about an experiance or lesson that ive learned through sports. I might try to volunteer at a hospital because i want to become a doctor but say if i didnt do that how would colleges view just 3 sports.
All my ECs are economic based lol so it’s definitely a huge passion of mine.
I am starting out with a principal of $100,000. It’s going to be really fun!!!
“I am starting out with a principal of $100,000. It’s going to be really fun!!!”
You’re parents are giving you $100,000 to invest? Wow, you must have done some dynamite work in those simulations.
Yes, I did do really well with these simulated investments. With this experience as well as my passion for and knowledge of economics, I’m lucky to have parents that are confident about my financial acumen.
Hey Shore! Wowey! A hundred grand before college is great! Just curious, which simulation website did you trade on? I’m interested in trading myself, but the only free site I managed to find was this place called Yalicoo- and it’s rather lame- allows you to trade equities only, so basically, you can’t diversify into commodities and forex, as you would in the real market, and it’s just limited to NASDAQ- so yeah, can’t really play on other markets. Just curious, do you just trade stocks? Nothing else? Yup, hope to get a reply soon! (:
Thanks in advance.
how are my ec’s?

Hey, 100%Tuna, I had a number of simulation websites but they’re mainly Australian based such as ASX (Australian Securities Exchange). And as part of a 4 month internship with a brokerage firm, they gave all the interns a internal competition and they were impressed with me (Lucky to have caught the gold boom in time ;)) so they gave me more opportunities and time after my 4 month internship expired. So it’s been like a 3 year process for me but the interest came after the dot.com burst in early 2000s.
If I was you then continue with as many online competitions etc in America (The Australian ones only let you in if you go to an Aussie school), urge your school to register for some (My school registered for ASX thus I had the opportunity) and then go to a broker’s and ask if you can get an internship.
I got the chance because a ex’s father was a broker and when we were chatting he really was impressed so I got the internship but everyone else in the program applied months in advance etc. So just stay on the lookout and that’s all I can say because I just got lucky in that my passion just had all the opportunities just waiting there for me…
Good luck and keep me in the loop with your competitions and progress. I might check out Yalicoo as well. Sucks about the lack of currency speculation and commodities. Because when you’re trying to make short term money, often they are the places to go…
If you’re looking for a good simulation website [although it doesn’t have much in the way of recognition, awards, etc.] try vse.marketwatch.com. My school used it last year for a little schoolwide investment contest. You have to either make or join a game.
Maybe I should make a CC Investment contest ![]()
The Common App has an “Expand upon an extracurricular” short response question. Would writing about National Novel Writing Month (a program where you write a novel, just for the pleasure of it and within a supportive community, all in a month) be a good choice for that essay? Or should I choose something more ‘traditional’ and something that I have done for years, such as tennis or speech, over it? Mainly I’m worried that this is my most “unique” EC, and it’s also the one that reflects one of my strongest, or the strongest, interests – writing – and I don’t know if that can be properly conveyed in 150 words (and I’m not sure how strict that 150 word limit is).
Why don’t you write your essay about writing? You don’t have to discuss your thoughts on writing in its entirety.
Is it safe to say that not many kids have raising and selling show rabbits as an EC? ![]()
abt how many hours should one have to apply to a top noch school like upenn or cornell?
