ledzeppelin, you seem passionate and exciting. you sound like a leader. good work ![]()
^eh resembles too much of a laundry list for me in its current form. You probably shouldn’t put all that down on your app. Especially all those interschool things (what are those?). They distract me from the cooler things you do/did.
Well this my TOTAL list of ECA’s, and I will refine it.
@senior well in my country, we compete with a lot of schools, ie we have competions with kids from other schools and here, we simply call it “interschool”
Anyway, in my common app activities, since we’re allowed ~10 activities? I’ll prolly include:
-the volunteer work @ orhpanages, rehabs and schools
-donation programs
-established library
-writing consultant, data enterer, compiler
-guitarist (cant miss that! planning to send a cd!)
-member of science clubs
-table tennis champion and leader
Should I include others as well? Please advise.
Which ones do you think will stand out, and will give me an edge over other applicants?

I was wondering if my relatively low GPA ( since my school does not weigh IB courses ) would hurt my chances as I have a 2.8 sophmore year and a 3.0 (but IB) Junior year. I struggled with my new school at first but Ive really come around in the last few months and I’m doing great in my senior year…anyone chance me for UVA, Berkeley, Babson, Boston College, and NYU?
Zeppelin- you get 12 activities, and you put them in order of what matters most to you. I had about 19 activities. My college counselor said to hold back on anything that is “a stretch” ie: girl scouts (which I quit after freshmen year) or french club (which only meets a few times a year). Still, they give you 12 spots, so use all twelve. Don’t downplay yourself. Also, there is a place to list awards, so you can totally do that too. Definitely write your explanation of an activity about all the good you do. Don’t write your common app personal statement about it as well; it’s very difficult to make a community service essay unique.
^ I actually have an essay relating my activities, but not totally based on activities. I think its kinda unique though ![]()
You thought that I was a “leader”, which activities made you think that? I get 12 activities, and i need help which ones to keep.
Btw where are you applying?

^I don’t get it. What is the point of that video?
So tell me, would this be good?
Performing arts is my life. I spend 2 p.m.-5 p.m. at musical rehearsals, and then 5 p.m.-9 p.m. at dance. Sometimes, I include different choruses, bands, etc. into this time, but on average, I spend 7 hours performing and rehearsing.
Would you say that would impress an admissions person? If I wrote an essay expressing my shear love and dedication to all things performing?
That would definitely be a good essay topic. However you should make it more personal and specific, the short prompt you put seems like you’re just stating the numbers and facts. If you are able to make the essay personal as to WHY you love the performing arts, then you have a winner.
I agree completely with the post above. Also, your essay would be especially meaningful if you could zoom in on one moment you spent practicing/rehearsing, or that one time when you met someone truly inspirational, etc. Avoid generalities. The most successful essays I’ve seen focus on one incident rather than listing a bunch of really general and (often) cliche facts.
Ok, I got you! That wasn’t my essay per say, just what I do. (So I could see if it was impressive.)
No, I think my essay will be the first time I step on stage in heels. (Comical, but truthful)
I’m a guy, by the way. I’m playing Edna in Hairspray xD
Actually, that or the time I dropped a bench on my foot right before a show, and had to dance two recitals with a broken toe.
Which would be more impressive/original?
Ha, well playing a girl in hairspray is definitely very original/unique, I would say go with that one.
Haha, ok thanks! I’ve got a little time before I have to write my essays, but it’s good to have it stored and ready to be written :]
I agree with SMRSMR. That definitely sounds like a very interesting and original essay topic.
