@fendergirl - good for you!
One thing I did not see mentioned on this thread was embracing the ideal of a capsule wardrobe (I may have missed it). I think this can be particularly helpful, especially for one’s professional wardrobe. My only challenge with that type of system are “occasion” events, so you can allow yourself a separate number of pieces outside of the capsule just for those depending on the number and how often you attend them. At any rate, as you go forward, perhaps you can work with an eye toward a capsule. This may actually mean acquiring some things to fill in gaps, but that’s okay as long as you are getting rid of items in other categories where you have too many.
My struggle with the capsule concept is that it often revolves around lots of black, gray, or taupe/tan. This is fine, except that I love a wide variety of colors. I also like prints. Living in Florida, both of these are common. Having previously lived in a state with seasons, I do think it it harder to pare down, but I think the capsule concept is a bit easier. Before moving here my neutrals were gray/black/white/denim and I added in a fall/winter color (usually red for me) and a spring/summer color (usually pink or purple for me). Having lots of separates that you can mix and match gives you a wider variety of outfits. You can also throw in scarves for color/variety.
Sounds like a great start! Typically, the more I purge, the more I want to purge.
