how to politely ask about status of recommendations?

pinecrest school?

Wow this is a thoughtful question. I’m sorry I couldn’t drop in by the right time to give my advice, but oh well > < Glad you got it covered. My biology teacher got my recommendations done over the weekend. ^^ She’s very prompt.

Actormcfamous: Thanks for your suggestions. I will pass them on to my son. Good luck to you!

Dear Mses Smith and Jones,
I am just writing to remind you that my application for Emerson is due November 1st. The admissions officer says my recommendations don’t have to be received by that date, but it is best if they arrive shortly after. Also, I am finalizing my college list this week with my dad (hopefully, if our schedules ever actually meet), and I will send that list to you and bring in envelopes. Again, thank you for all your help; it is much appreciated!!
Sincerely,
Patsygirl

I sent my teachers a few emails like this, polite and friendly reminders about deadlines and stuff. This was, of course ,after I asked them in person. Asking a teacher for a recommendation by email is like breaking up with your bf via text messaging :)

Have you tried asking them?

Ummm I just found out that my teacher didn’t submit the rec for Michigan and everything else is in… how annoying is that??

fringey, for you and for everyone. It is not at all unusual for the recs to arrive after the application (and maybe some other materials, such as transcripts) are in. This is the perfect opportunity to check on the status of your recs with the teachers.

Check online and see that your app/scores/transcripts are in, but that the rec is not.

Call/email the teacher that College A has notified you that it has processed all of your materials except for the recommendation. Ask if the teacher would like you to provide a new stamped addressed envelope.

All of my other stuff made it in before the Early Response deadline… now I’m worried I won’t be considered cause my teacher didn’t send it in on time

Props to my IB Econ teacher for forgetting to send in my letter of rec until two days ago (Grinnell’s ED deadline was November 20th).

Hopefully I won’t be screwed out of consideration because of that.

Just walk in and say something along the lines of, “Phew! I just send out. It feels so good to slowly get this weight off my shoulders!”

And they’ll be like, “Uhhh… I didn’t send my rec out, but it’ll be done by tomorrow! No fears, little student of mine!” Or they might say, “No fears, little student of mine! I already sent it out!”

And then you’ll say, “Aww, sir! That’s swell. Thanks a bundle of wheat and 2 chickens. I actually I have to go find the cure for cancer and get back in time for AP Basket Weaving extra help, so see you soon!”

“Little student of mine, adios. Espero que tengas suerte.”

Well just “remind” him about it.

how do you write a “thank you note?” It’s something that everyone says to do, but nobody teaches you how.

What would putting a postcard in the envelope do?
I’m being slow here…

I just wrote quick things like, “Thank you so much for writing my letter or recommendation. It means a lot to me and I really appreciate it.”

Something along those lines that was short, sweet and to the point.

I wish I had asked about my recommendations earlier…
One of my teachers never sent in my letter for my ED, even though I reminded him 4 times, and each time he said he would send it that day. 3 weeks after it was due I ended up going to another teacher to get a last minute rec, but it was too late and I got deferred.

The way I have done recommendation packets (resumes, transcripts, recommendation forms from university, etc.) in the past, I give recommenders one deadline (4 weeks) , but I work from another (6 weeks). That way, in the event that your recommender is a bit of a procrastinator you can still be a little nudging and not be too nervous about it. I have found if I do need to check up on a recommender’s progress I always begin my email or note with how grateful I am for their help and then gently ease into when they might forward the sealed envelope back to me. I also end the email or note politely.
