Our highest score on our IB Math HL was a 7… and this was like years ago.

Like 10 years ago, before our current teacher came in.

Currently, I believe our highest is either a 5 or a 6.

So planning on changing that MIT?

I plan to. If the class of 2011 doesn’t do it first.

FlMathMom - Sorry, I thought most new schools’ courses were easy. To be honest, there’s no reason to have an appointment with the GC because I’m taking the most advanced courses I can take. To be honest, some of my friends and I were having such a breeze through math that they had to create an extra accelerated class for us. I would take AP in 9th and 10th, but my school doesn’t offer it.

kenzie - Would it look sketchy if I take the AP exams of the IB courses I take? Haha yeah, this was supposed to be preparing for IB. I guess in a way self-studying could be a way due to more work, but yes you’re right.

^ It’s not sketchy, as you pay for the exam and take a course equivalent to it.

I’m doing the same for Comp Sci, Math, APUSH, Chem, and Spanish

MIThopeful - So you are doing it for HL and SL? Sorry, I’m still a little confused about this, but the IB History I will take be on the U.S., right? I thought it focused on all of North America, which would me it is lacking in detail, right?

I guess I’m not being clear so I’ll give some examples. In grade 10, my son took AP Stats and AP Calc AB. Since your school doesn’t have AP classes, the equivalent would probably be Stats and Calc I.

During the year, you could get an AP book for each class and study the areas your teacher does not cover. In May, you would be ready to take the AP test in both Stats and Calc AB. You could also take the SAT II test in Math.

By doing this, you show the AdComs that your non-AP courses in your new school are as rigorous as a HS in another town. You also might get some college credit depending on your major and where you apply.

I suggested you meet with the GC and IB coordinator to begin to develop a relationship with them. You are clearly a student with special needs and lofty goals. It is important to have adults supporting you and helping you achieve these goals. In addition, the questions you are asking strangers on this forum can be answered much more accurately by administrators in YOUR school. They know your school’s curriculum and program of study.

It does focus primarily on North America. There’s about a 60% correlation between IB HOA HL and APUSH.

I take them for HL courses because many schools I want to attend instate dislike IB Credit.

Oh Ok! I get it! The only problem is that I will be taking PreCal next year for math. But, next year I am doubling up in Chemistry and Biology (Physics is taught at a first course so no hope for AP exam unless I take IB equivalent), so I might be able to take the APs in those I guess. However, since it’s science, and not math, it’s mainly more memorization and not application. Currently, I’m taking a Psychology elective. If I take the second part of it, I might consider the AP exam for that. I think Stats would be too complicated for me given I am only in Alg 2.

I probably should talk to the GC, and probably will in a bit. I have a good relation with the IB Coordinator because she teacher one of my classes and really likes me so that is a bonus. :D

This thread has been pretty helpful to me, I think I’ve decided what I want to do for my IB subjects…
HL English Lit
SL Spanish
HL History
HL Geography
SL/HL Math
SL/HL Bio
I’m not sure whether I want to take SL or HL Math and Bio.

Not that much diff between HL/SL bio. Wheras HL maths and SL maths is completely different in terms of getting a 7. Getting a 7 in SL Maths is like getting a 3/4 in HL Maths. The content isnt that hard but u need to have a knack at solving problems for HL maths. Depends on what you want to pursue in college would it be maths related? (engineering, (applied) maths, finance, stats etc.) If so HL Maths would be the norm. Otherwise SL Maths is fine. Are you doing the full IB Diploma>?

hanana, in my school usually people that have taken Pre-Cal in 10th grade take HL and people who took Alg 2 in 10th take SL

but the HL exam for math can only be taken Senior year, so they do what for a year?

and in my school, the first 3/4 of the year is HL precalc, while the last 1/4 is calc. Second year of HL math is the calculus.

^At my school, the math SL class is a prerequisite to math HL, kids just don’t test SL. so it would be
9th: Alg II
10th: Precalc
11th: Math SL (no test)
12th: Math HL (test)

Wow. Our Math HL and Math SL classes are so different.

9th: Geometry or Alg 2/Trig(Very few freshman like this)

10th: Alg2/Trig or HL/SL 1(Those very few sophomores)

11th: HL/SL SL II(Can’t take HL II Jr year because they can’t take the test)

12: HL II/SL II

I’m trying to make them offer Further Mathematics SL, which I know has to be take with HL II.

Our Alg 2/Trig class is almost equivalent with our HL 1. I know everything in HL 1 from my Alg 2/Trig.

We just have Math as a subject in NZ, not Algebra I, Geometry and stuff. So I’m not sure what ‘level’ I’m at in terms of math. Currently I’m doing the NCEA Level 1 Math (which is an accelerated math course for my grade).

In my school, since Pre-Cal is a prerequisite of Math HL, I guess in HL I would be doing Calculus AB & BC

We cover BC in a semester here. We know the derivative in maybe 3 days, worked on the integral 3 days of the next week, then practiced both.

I guess I made this thread on preparing for IB and if whether self-studying AP would help me. What I will probably do as a result is just study some subjects on my own, but not take the test. I don’t think I have to be that serious and by the time it comes to IB, I will have experience with doing a lot of work. I checked out some tests, and I’m pretty sure I won’t do well on them, and it might defer colleges away from me if they see low AP scores. I really only wanted to self-study for some useful knowledge as well. Thanks for all the guidance! Also, I guess the IB courses will count for college so hopefully I won’t have to take too many introductory courses.

One thing I will say though, IB in America… it depends on the college. Like most of my colleges accept 6’s and 7’s on HL exams only.

If you’re aiming for the CC usual, your work in IB is made that much harder.
