No, it was for the AMC 12A. The cutoff for the AMC 12B was 100, which I thought was really weird since everyone was saying that the 12A was easier than the 12B.

For those who don’t know, the AMC board decided to have calculators banned on the AMC, starting from 2008.

I’m very happy about this move, but too bad I’m graduating this year.

lolololololololol

my school’s math department head doesn’t want to give me the AIME because I would be the only one who qualified to take it. I’ve never qualified before, and I’ve always wanted to take a stab at it… :(

anybody have know what i can do? (am I permitted to request to take it at another location?)

kexykes, are you sure?

You should be able to take it somewhere else. Contact the AMC headquarters NOW with that question. I think they have an (800) toll-free phone number. I would offer you space in my testing location in Minnesota, but that is probably too far away from where you live. Good luck.

naidu: Yes, that’s for sure. It’s been posted all over AoPS by people who know what they’re talking about.

^ just wanted to make sure, okay? I wasn’t refuting what the other poster was saying, I just couldn’t believe it.

Sorry I don’t visit the Art of Problem Solving website as much as you do

naidu, I know for sure in past years kids in the Bay Area would take it where ever it was offered…Berkeley kids going down to Stanford, My son was the only kid at his high school to qualify for the AIME one year and he thought of going down to another high school but his high school counselor was willing to proctor it for him. The math teacher/coach doesn’t have to be the one to do it…I think one school in the Bay Area, the kids went to the school library and a parent proctored it in the school library. So there are lots of options.

I wasn’t the one that wanted that info, it was abhim89. Oh well, thanks anyway :)

thanks tokenadult and oaklandmom… my guidance counselor will proctor me. i’m definitely getting a 0 though, i barely qualified for the AIME as it is. i’ll just take it for fun

Sorry, naidu, I didn’t mean to brush you off or anything. I just wanted to cite some kind of source without saying “x, y, z, and w say blah blah blah…” and being tedious.

What do you think of buying just one of the AoPS books? Should I buy the first one, or the second one, or would you really recommend buying both? I’m a junior with a strong (Chinese) mathematics background. I’d like to start preparing now, over the summer. I only got 89 this year without preparation, but I’d like to at least qualify for AIME next year.
