How to quote someone in replies?

There are so many formats presented above that I am confused. Can someone please show again how this is done? I see square brackets, with spaces and without, forward slashes at the beginning and at the end, regular brackets, hints for quoting “someone” (presumably with their identity quoted) versus merely quoting something they wrote etc etc. Rather confusing. Thanks, in advance!

Never mind. All I had to do was delete the spaces within the square brackets.
