How to remove BAD smell from car interior??!!

More great suggestions today - thanks! I think he’s going to start off by setting out some charcoal in the car as well as brushing baking soda into the upholstery and then vacuuming it back out. He’ll also spray Febreeze and leave the windows open as much as he can, but the car is parked in shade on the street so he can’t leave doors open. If those things don’t work, then he needs to look for some of the specialty products like the one dmd77 linked to.

I know it’s going to take several weeks at a minimum. I had a bottle of apple juice to break and spill in my hatchback trunk once and it smelled awful for a really long time, even after shampooing the carpet and airing out the car. I thought the smell would never go away!

dmd, yes it was just like that. I don’t remember the brand I used, but it was amazingly effective. It would certainly be easy to use in a car, just slip it under the seat. In this case the offending seat!

patsmom, don’t waste money on Febreeze, get a Lysol air spray. Isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) works great to kill bacteria and is pretty much safe to use on many surfaces (some dog owners wipe their dog’s coats with it to remove the wet dog smell - it works (until the bacteria comes back)!). You can buy activated charcoal in granules and set a few dishes filled with it in the car (just make sure to remove them before using the car or spilled charcoal will create a new headache):
