Hey all, I hope you could shed some light for me here.
I am a sophmore at wagner college and i want to transfer. I am a biopsychology major at wagner and I would like to do something along those lines at my other university. However, wagner has a different credit system, where it uses units. 1 unit is equal to about 3.3 credits and you need 36 to graduate. Additionaly, my first semester at wagner we had learning communities that had nothing to do with my major, so I am not sure if i have enough major prerequisites. I want to go to UPitt, UCLA or NYU for neuroscience. I want to ask how would the units transfer to other institutions and how would they get converted? Also, because of the Learning community, i couldnt pick classes my first semester. How do i know that those classes (which were picked for me) would count towards my credits and would transfer?
I feel so lost in this process and i dont want to ask my advisor for help yet because i am afraid she will judge me for wanting to transfer. Help please.
Recipient schools are accustomed to converting credits from one school’s system to their system.
The two most important parts of one’s transfer application are GPA earned at your current college and the reason/reasons that you want to transfer to that particular college or university.
Your current college counselor can help.
Many big public schools have conversion databases. For example, you will search from what school you are transferring from and it will show that Math ABC 1 credit is equivalent to Math ACD 3 credits etc. For small schools you need to contact that school and ask them. Some small schools refuse to recalculate until you are accepted…
If you are transferring as a current sophomore seeking a change for your final two years of college, then your college grades and reasons for wanting to transfer to that particular university will be the most important factors.
Consider emailing or calling the admissions offices of your target schools to get more authoritative & accurate responses.
I think that it is fine to ask your academic advisor for help and advice. They are likely to want to know why you want to transfer.
Transferring as an undergraduate is not all that unusual. Completing your bachelor’s degree at one college or university and then getting a master’s degree (or some other graduate degree) somewhere else is very common, at least for students who get a graduate degree.
If you will be transferring as a junior, your college record will be the most important factor. IB scores may be evaluated for transfer credit based on the new college’s IB score policy (which may be different from that of your current college).
Oh okay, thats great! I was also wondering if the LC in wagner college would be a problem? In my freshman year I had an LC (learning community). Badically they give you teo subjects that are connected and then a reflection session. So 3 courses, 3 units. But you cant change those courses and im afraid that some credits from it wont count.
