Howard University Karsh STEM Scholars Program (KSSP)

@ChangeTheGame - thanks for the help you’ve given me and everyone else on this forum.
As for OP’s question. It depends. My cohort 6 Karshie has been lucky enough to get research opportunities during the school year – for both freshman and sophomore years. She had a research internship last summer that was physically close enough and flexible enough that we just did long weekend stuff rather than a full vacation. This summer my Karshie doesn’t have a research position lined up. Whether that’s by her design or not I’m not quite sure.

Does anyone know how many people applied to KSSP this year? I’m curious about the acceptance rate

Good evening. Has anyone from cohort 8 able to register for fall semester classes? My son is having difficulty with the new system. Wondering if it’s something we’re doing wrong…

@ChangeTheGame

New year is upon us and reviving the thread for DD25 who will be applying to the new cohort. Please provide any advice for the application, how to prep for the math placement test and the interview weekend. Also, how can an applicant with previous research experience highlight it on their application. What else do you think helped successful students shine and be accepted? Anyone with previous experience, please feel free to chime in and share your knowledge. To another successful year of the Karsh Stem program!

Hey, @magnetnh. I am not on College Confidential often anymore, so I am sorry it took me so long to respond. I think that the Karsh thread has a lot of information about the process and the type of student that Karsh is looking for. My #1 piece of advice that I gave to my own kids and continue to share with other potential hopefuls is that you have been preparing your entire lives for this opportunity whether you know it or not. The goal is to believe that you are worthy of the opportunity and to show Karsh (or any opportunity that you shoot for) the best version of who you really are and being prepared. It is hard to believe your child is planning to apply to the 9th Cohort (My cohort 2 scholar just finished up her Master’s 3 weeks ago). Congratulations to you and your family for raising such an outstanding student-scholar and good luck.

P.S. I also sent you a DM if you have any other questions.

Now that the cycle for the K9 cohort selection is complete, here’s the timeline we had:

  • January 30: Application due
  • February 20: Invitation to test
  • February 26: Math Placement Test information received (select date & time)
  • March 1-3: Testing Period
  • March 5: Invite to TRACKS Weekend (March 14-15)
  • March 11: TRACKS Itinerary received
  • March 14-15: TRACKS Weekend
  • April 4: Karsh Decision

If you are invited to test, things will start happening very quickly so be prepared. We had to cancel one set of plans to make the weekend work, but we did so happily. This thread has been helpful to many and is often referenced by Karsh parents, so thanks to all for keeping it alive.

I know a lot of people want advice or tips but I beg you to let yourself/your scholar be authentic. This is not the type of program you should bluff or fake your way into for the sake of a scholarship. Karsh ain’t for everybody and everybody ain’t for Karsh. It’s a serious commitment and you want to get chosen for the right reasons. Anyone who makes it this far will do just fine.
