I’d have my kids skip “selling fireworks”.
“Not everyone is qualified for life guarding – or has the time or skills to get qualified.”
Most lifeguarding jobs require Red Cross or equivalent certification. It takes time and $$ to do it. If the kid has been a competitive swimmer, she would have no problem taking the training and passing the test. My kid supplemented her lifeguarding job with teaching private swim lessons - those paid $40/hr!
Oh, no doubt it is a great job for those who have the certification. But for our kids who got stuck at RC Level 5 (both my kids) and just could not get past it, it isn’t going to be a choice.
Has she looked on www.Snagajob.com ? It’s almost exclusively the types of jobs a student would be looking for.
Intparent, that was exactly my point: often, people suggest lifeguarding because it looks like an easy, good seasonal job for a teen, but the reality is that it is not that easy to get into because it requires skills and certification.
^^And certification costs about $200 for two years. My daughter did get a Y to pay for hers as a perk of employment. I wasn’t aware that people see lifeguarding as a menial job. Younger kids look up to lifeguards. Granted it doesn’t require a brain surgeon’s education and talent but it is a skill many do not have.
I hire college kids every summer. I’m in the medical business and we get really busy over the summer. We teach them some basics, and they usually pick up way quicker than my usual employees. They can then cover for all the employees who take off over the summer.
I always temped over breaks and summers. It made me a better employee having to walk into a new place and pick up new tasks quickly.
Our kid worked as a teacher’s aid for a summer program. He volunteered after JR year and was hired for the next 2 summers. He loved it and they loved him. Since it was a summer only job, it worked well for him and them.
Thanks to everyone who responded. She is not qualified to be a life guard and at this point it is too late to become certified for that. I cross posted on a local school district parent group and got some good ideas for local “summer only” jobs that don’t require certification (and best of all are only for the summer). Additionally, since I posted here I learned that there is a “Summer Job Fair” at her high school on Thursday after school.
