@carolinamom2boys - I love the “modern day Macgyver” description. That is so H. He has an old Bronco and has rigged some inverter thing to it that is powering the frig. He has battery chargers, propane cookers, walkie-talkies, LED lanterns, etc. I swear he lives for these situations.
@scmom12 - I just found out that my SIL, who lives near us in MTP, has power. I assumed that everyone lost power, but obviously not the case. At least I can go to her house for a hot shower if our power is not restored soon.
We had one tree come down, but fortunately, it did not hit the house. All is well. Thanks for the good thoughts everyone!
@Overtheedge Are you sure that we are not married to the same man? We have all of those too including a small generator . I see a reality show in the making. Stay safe.
Just talked to my daughter who is back in Melbourne. She does not have electricity (lives in a house right by Fla Tech campus) but her boyfriend who lives about a mile away has power. She said a tree fell on their roof but not much damage. Much to my surprise they are resuming school on tuesday, as Monday is a holiday and Tues was already a scheduled day off from classes. School doesn’t have power now but expects it by sunday.
Biggest damage is to her waistline, as she said they did nothing but eat junk for 4 days.
“Biggest damage is to her waistline, as she said they did nothing but eat junk for 4 days.”
Quite common during disasters. When I went on a grocery run during our recent floods, I was amused that in addition to being almost out of bread, the store was out of almot every single kind of chips.
My daughter’s trip is back on. She and her friend have had to make some alternative plans but she just landed in Orlando and they’re heading to one of the theme parks tomorrow. I’m happy for her and the rest of you that this storm wasn’t as bad as it could have been in Florida.
My friend posted some pictures of Hilton Head Island. Lots of downed trees, boats smashed in the harbors, Salty Dog looking a little battered. They were trying to clear the airport, hospital and emergency facilities first.
Small rant. People in evacuation zones told to leave and told that after a certain point first responders would not be sent out for their own safety. So of course people on social media now complaining about calls going unanswered. Really? You were TOLD to leave. Sigh.
I think our coast really took a hit. Hopefully it’s mostly power outages keeping some areas closed. Parents in pee dee in the dark but okay although some parts of town flooded all from rain
On HH, no power and no water. Most roads in the plantations are unpassable due to tens of thousands of downed trees. Some roads are flooded or washed out. A good part of Sea Pines is underwater. The videos that tour the Island are devastating.
No one is being allowed onto the Island. Just clearing the trees off the roads, let alone the golf courses and homes is going to take a very long time. They are calling for arborists to come and assist.
I was impressed with my city’s workers. At 9:30 am, Friday morning, they cut up the 12’ branch from the oak tree by my driveway. They must have had every truck and man employed.
Good luck to you, alwaysamom, sCMom, and the rest.
OP here! Atlanta was fine. Travel was fine on Friday. We are heading back to New England this early evening. We are at a Sonesta which also has a hotel on Hilton Head. Every room in this place is full. Sonesta evacuated all of the guests and employees to this hotel. Also, lots of folks from Savannah and Charleston. They were heading to the pool…figured they needed to occupy the time somehow.
Hoping you SC/NC folks are all ok in the end. This storm is a doozie.
IME, it’s pretty common to have gorgeous weather in the days immediately following a hurricane. All the bad weather gets sucked up into the storm, so once it moves out, it’s often quite nice. Which can be really good if you have no power
^Yes! It is a beautiful day. I’ve been alternating between yard and basement clean up (and working off some of those disaster calories). I went to the office and we have power and Internet. I have to admit that I was disappointed. I was hoping to have a few days at home to get things back together. Instead, I think it will be business as usual tomorrow.
@scmom12 - I chose to stay (H twisted my arm), but I did so knowing that we were on our own. I agree with you.
These storms are dreadful. Glad the CC crowd is safe-That’s what matters!
Can anybody tell me the last time Hilton Head Island had significant damage from a hurricane? It seems to have been very lucky over the last 20 (or so) years. Appears that luck has run out in this case. --Such a beautiful island. Hate to hear about the destruction there. Guess they’ve lost lots of those pretty, pretty trees.
