Hurricane Irma

The news said that guy was a storm chaser, not a meteorologist, @romanigypsyeyes

I can check in from my phone app.

https://www.nbcnews.com/video/storm-chaser-fights-against-hurricane-irma-s-powerful-winds-1043347523686. Justin Drake -a storm chaser.

@jym626 looks like both. Per his twitter profile:

Juston Drake
@JustonStrmRider
Meteorologist, Storm Chaser, Photo/Videographer, Hooper, Traveler, and Sports Enthusiast featured on The Weather Channel show Storm Riders.

Looked it up (because now I’m curious): he does have a degree in meteorology.

The radar picture posted on CNN at 1:00pm shows much diminished Irma to my untrained eyes. Not much left on the west and southern side of the system. What am I missing?

ya know what that justin Drake guy is? He’s a nut!!

I don’t know how long it’ll be up but there’s a chaser on Marco Island. Here’s a link to the live video feed from his vehicle:

Things will get really exciting in an hour or so.

@jym626 I’m with you on that.

These things just aren’t worth your life, people. Reporters and meteorologists shouldn’t be out in this crap. I don’t care what kind of precautions were taken (or weren’t as in this case).

TWC was stressing that those near the coast should not think the storm is over when the winds die down. The worst of the storm surge will occur after the storm appears to have passed.

S and DIL report lights flickering where they are staying west of Ft. Lauderdale. They have received updates from their Palmetto Bay(Miami) neighborhood reporting lots of downed trees and unpassable roads.

I’m impressed by how the weather reporters just keep talking and talking and talking. I shut up when I have nothing new to say. Not them!

Just heard General Honore’ on CNN, I hope they take his advice and take the grid down to prevent fires.

They have already cancelled school for the next two days all around Atlanta http://www.wsbtv.com/news/local/schools-closing-ahead-of-hurricane-irma-impact-in-georgia/605665379

Seems people standing out in the wind/water, hunched over to avoid being blown over is so dumb. I guess this is what the viewing public wants? Something like watching car races to see accidents I guess. Seeing the waves crashing, trees bending in the wind etc. isn’t enough. Need to see people standing in it to make it real?

At least the storm tracker, Mark Sudduth, planted a camera on the pier at Marco Island and is safely inland.

For those with family or friends in the WPB area, just saw this FB update from a retired colleague who lives there now and who is riding the storm out, along with her husband:

Just a quick update. No internet, cable or running water but still have power so the AC is on! My phone is acting up so wanted to get a message out. We are okay. We are now under sustained winds of 70 miles an hour with higher gusts and heavy rain. We are expecting the worst sometime later today. Our building is built to withstand this and will seek shelter in the stairwell as the winds build.

I am not a particular fan of Jim Cantori for a variety of reasons, including what his neighbors (my friends) said about issues relating to his leaving his wife who has Parkinson’s, so if he gets blown over in the storm, that might be worth watching.

News says a second crane fell or snapped or the like in Miami.

Well, we went against conventional wisdom and decamped to Ormond Beach (from Gainesville).

It was an interesting ride over . . . no gas, anywhere (the last time I saw a working gas station was right near the UF campus). I am incredibly thankful we found gas the last couple days.

Anyway, we’re OK and continuing to pray. Even over here on the east side there is high potential for tornadoes.

Glad you arrived safely, @SouthFloridaMom9. Keep us abreast of your situation as long as you have power/wifi. Best wishes to you and other Floridians.

There are enough ways to put cameras and action them from inside. If people need to “measure” how bad it is, they can put a fully-dressed 160 pound dummy with a mop of hair out, and see how the hair flies, how the clothes snap, how the dummy sways in the wind, etc.

Good news, @SouthFloridaMom9 , was kind of worried.
