We are far from landfall here in SW VA. But Radford University has flooding already in some parking lots. The New River is expected to crest at five feet above flood level in the next few days. We’ve had rain all day and tomorrow we’ll have severe weather with thunderstorms and sustained winds of 25-30 mph and gusts up to 45 from 8am - 4pm.
My thoughts are with those closer to the worst of the storm.
Helene is huge. Here in Tampa, we’ve had high winds but the real problem is storm surge and flooding. We’re still 4 hours from high tide and the water is already at record levels. Even though the eye of the storm never got closer than 90 miles from us it’s still been very destructive. We’re going to have a lot of flooded homes. I helped my son put up flood barriers today at his house and I really hope they work.
So far we have power although there have been several blips that caused everything to reboot. We have a whole house generator so I never prepare to be without power. But there is problem tonight with the natural gas supply so a lot of generators aren’t coming on like they are supposed to.
The area we used to live in (between Clearwater and St Pete) is devastated from surge. The entire island is under water. Many seeking help with rescues where water is coming into homes. Dunes and sea walls breached. Cars almost completely under water. I’m in a local FB group, and what I’m seeing is unbelievable.
I cannot begin to imagine what it’s going to be like where it actually hits.
I have been going around the house taking photos of things, in case a tree comes through the roof/into the family room, kitchen or dining room. I will be sleeping (if I can) in the basement. It sounds pretty quiet at the moment….
This is record breaking flooding in Tampa Bay. I’ve never seen any standing water on my street and it was up to our knees after midnight. The water reached the base of our front entry and then started to recede. For days all the forecasts were for a 5-8’ surge. And 2 different weather guys actually made a point to say it would be on the low end because that was a worst case forecast. Unfortunately it came in much closer to 8’.
I just heard from our daughter in law and they are dry. Their next door neighbor has 5" of water in her house and the folks across the street left when it started pouring through their front door.
A bit nervous about the winds bringing down trees, but less so since the storm turned east of us. They are now predicting winds in the 30-40 mph range vs the 60-70 mph originally forecast.
The nearby creek has flooded the roads and I just saw (on the news) a young family with a baby and pets being rescued from the top of their car. I’m staying inside and off the roads. Thankful I’m well uphill from the creek.
Be safe, everyone. I’m grateful the updates here sound like most everyone and their families are okay. Thoughts going out to those not as fortunate.
Ditto. Lots of flooding but fortunately not a lot of trees down. Been chatting with a neighbor and the house between us (we both keep an eye out for it as the owners spend half their time in FL) have som flooding intheir back yard but hopefully not into their house.
I’m in the SC midlands. Lots of downed trees and power outages. We are lucky on one front, we still have power. Not so lucky on the tree front. This one missed the house by 6 inches!
Stay safe. The storm turned east so Atl, while getting lots of rain and flooding and they still expect more downed trees and power outages, it wasn’t as bad as expected. Hoping those in the carolina’s are ok.
There are ~600k customers without power here in upstate SC between Duke and Blue Ridge; we lost our’s around 4:30am. They can’t start assessing damage until the rain and winds die down later today. Lots of trees down and the lake is coming up over the top of the rip rap.
Lost power at 10:30 pm last night. Electric company assessing our neighborhood and city said 60 trucks from SC coming (which I think is odd since they likely need the trucks themselves)….and that we likely won’t get power restored for at least two days.
Not sure if true but supposedly we had gusts of 100 and sustained winds of 60.
I’m in Gainesville, FL less than 2 miles from UF campus.
Well, took a golf cart ride but couldn’t get out of the neighborhood. The main access road and several of the roads in the neighborhood are blocked with trees and downed power lines everywhere. Lots of trees on houses as well. It looks more like a tornado went through because so many trees and power poles are snapped in half. Guessing it’s going to be a quite a few days til we get power; hopefully no one was injured.
How’s everyone holding up.
