Husband surprised me with a cruise to Alaska in 3 weeks!!! What should I know?

Ok, thanks. We have asked many times at CVS in the past. We have no need at the moment, as we have no cruises scheduled. Will ask next time we go to a CVS, just for info.

When I put Bonine in CVS’ search engine in San Jose, CA, I get many hits, but some stores don’t carry it.

Loved our Alaska cruise a few years ago. We were on Princess out of Vancouver and we docked in Whittier, south of Anchorage so our ship went into Glacier Bay which was amazing. The national park rangers came on board for an afternoon and there were booths that were set up along with a presentation. There was also a presentation by LIbby Riddles, the first woman to win the Iditarod.
I will second and third the White Pass Railroad out of Skagway. I booked a tour provider that was recommended on Cruise Critic. I also recommend the Mendenall Glacier. There are schoolbuses that you take there for a nominal cost from the cruise dock area. The visitors center is quite good.
Definitely take gloves and either a hat or head warmer to cover your ears. We did spend a lot of time outside on the decks. Dress in layers and you will be fine. I dressed in layers and wore a fleece and was very comfortable.
When you are in port in Juneau, Ketchikan you are in the U.S and your cell phone will work without any problem. Check your carrier’s coverage of course.

I’ve found the inventory online for CVS flawed before. When I’ve searched for travel-size Boston contact solution, it lists several HI stores. I called each and NONE stock it at all! I’m glad I didn’t drive there to be disappointed.

If you are stopping in Juneau, and the weather is at least partly clear, take the Mt Roberts tramway. it’s very close to the docks, but takes you to another world. Beautiful nature loop walk at the top (Walk, not strenuous hike). And the gift shop at the top has locally made items, not the usual tourist-trap made in China items.

And don’t buy any of the overpriced Tanzanite jewelry…

DH and DS21 swear by the scopolamine patch for seasickness. So, different people have different reactions.

DH has more problems than usual with near vision after a few days with the patch. DS21 uses 1/2 or less of a patch, because he is small. For both of them, we put a small bandaid over the patch, because rubbing the patch and then rubbing eyes causes blurred vision quickly, rather than after a few days.

It’s very rare to get sea sick on a cruise these days. Don’t let all the posts scare you! My favorite Alaska memory was the fabulous whale watching trip we enjoyed. If you happen to be stopping in Juneau google Hal & Marv and hopefully you’ll have the same great adventure!

Update!! We returned from our cruise about 3 weeks ago and had a wonderful time. I can’t believe how beautiful Alaska is. The ship was lovely. The food was wonderful. We had a great time with our excursions and just walking around the different towns that we stopped in. My highlight was seeing the Hubbard glacier. It was amazing. It took my breath away. I now wish that we would have taken the excursion to fly over the glaciers. I am sure that the view would have been wonderful.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. They really helped. Monday was a bit rough, but I didn’t get seasick at all. I felt a little off, but never sick. The weather was great. The 60 degree weather was such a lovely change from the 95 degree weather we have had this summer.

If you have never gone to Alaska, I highly recommend it. It was wonderful!!! I hope we can get back someday.

It’s on my bucket list, just need to get everyone else on board (so to speak).

HiMom- I’m on the central coast of Ca and I have not had a problem buying Bonine or its equivalent. I have found it at CVS also available in CVS brand. I also find the least expensive place to buy it is a local independent pharmacy that sells it in a larger bottle. I use it for seasickness and also when I’m experiencing periods of vertigo.
Silver lady/ glad you had a great trip.

Reviving this thread as we are looking at a family cruise this summer. We will be hosting so ant to keep costs reasonable. Looking for recommendations: which route, which cruiseline, which ports, etc. Thanks!

We did Seattle back to Seattle on the Golden Princess. It was cheaper flying found trip in and out of Seattle, tho you can see more if you are depart one port and return to another. We did the inside passage, last cruise in September.

We did the land/sea cruise through Princess - very nice but I was disappointed that the Princess hotels removed all coffeemakers out of the rooms, you literally had to stand in line 20 people deep to get a cup of coffee at 6:30 in the morning before your 7:00 a.m. tour departed.

Very good trip though, but costlier than just the cruise only We did the White Pass Railroad excursion, the 12 hour (or however long, really long but really worth it) Denali National Park tour…it truly does look like another world out there.

My next trip is a Canadian Rocky Tour by rail - I’ve done this but my husband hasn’t…will start saving as soon as tuition allows.

WHich port did you start/end from? WHich port is best if anyone wants to do the Denali land part?
