You clearly don’t understand how the system works. ,‘might be able to handle APs’ is a kiss of death recommendation.
If you truly want to attend a university such as VTech do 11th and 12th grade at your current high school, taking classes appropriate for your level, taking time to establish a relationship with teachers so that they can comment on your academic and personal qualities with lively anecdotes, getting involved in clubs so you can elected to a leadership position in the Spring, get involved in competitions so you can apply with the awards and wins.
Or go straight to 12th grade and apply without all this. If you lose the gamble, there’s no do-over.
If you don’t get into VA Tech as a freshman applicant, sit down with a counselor at the closest VA community college, and find out about the transfer agreements that community college has with VA Tech and the other VA universities. Lots of VA students follow that route.
If you are going straight to 12th grade here, are you going to apply to Vtech with your 10th grade transcript? And recommendations from teachers in Bangladesh?
Because that’s all that you have at this point.
MYO S1634, according to my high school IGCSEs are equivalent to 11th grade in the US system. Also, I do not understand why my letter of recommendation from Bangladesh is worthless. As far as extracurriculars go I am teaching underprivileged kids once a week and also attending kickboxing lessons
According to your Bangladeshi high school or your American high school?
Academically I have no issue saying you’ve reached an 11th grade level but in terms of years -which us high schools consider - it represents 10 years. So, you’d be an academically-advanced 11th grader, which is much better than an average 12th grader.
If your American high school lets you right into 12th they’re not doing you a favour…
Your letter from Bangladesh is not worthless but your American guidance counsellor will be REQUIRED to complete the secondary school report and you’ll have to find a teacher at your current high school who can write about you, because colleges will want to know how you handle an American high school. You’ll then ‘attach’ the two letters to each common app file. In some cases the last+ Bangladeshi letter will be enough but not always.
Okay you guys were right. I moved to Virginia in September and got my transcripts evaluated… The school wanted to admit me into 12th grade but I decided to be held back in 11th grade for the reasons you guys posted above. Now, it took the international welcome center 6 weeks to get my credits transferred so i missed 6 weeks of school.
When i went to the get registered today, i was told that i would not be able to take AP courses since i did not have a recommendation from a US HS teacher. I understand that but the thing that bothers me is that they are making me take courses that i already took in my HS in Bangladesh! ( math analysis, honors physics, honors chemistry). I got a A*s in those classes on my IGCSE exam. Is that not enough to prove i am capable of taking them.
i also introduced myself to my ap teachers via before i moved. Also, i have covered the missed work. Is there anyway way i can get my honors teachers to bump me up to AP? Please help me my future depends on this.
oh and sorry for the poor grammar and organization of this post. I so mad and frustrated i can’t think straight
You can take AP exams without taking the AP classes. There are lots of books to help you prep for these tests.
Can your parents help you in this “discussion” with the school? I know I’d be raising Cain if my child had already gone through the class.
they did but to no avail
Go all to the principal. Explain you were in a British school.
Beforehand : copy paste the syllabi for each subject.(because igcse is standardized they’re easy to find). Find the percentage students nationally who got results such as yours (you may have to use international results, in which case say it’s x top percent internationally). Note the reference for them to check in each.
Have your parents bring those documents to the principal.
If it goes nowhere, indicate you’re willing to go higher up abd/up bring your lawyer into this.
