I am in TCNJ for CS but my parents want me to transfer to Rutgers CS

I have a Rutgers business school graduate, and a TCNJ business school graduate, I wouldn’t rank one higher than the other, they’re just different. Both had internships that led to full time employment. Both are still there 4 - 6 years later, and are doing well.

It sounds like this is kind of a done deal, I’m afraid. And the problem is that no matter what you do, you will never know whether your choice made a difference vis-a-vis outcomes. If you transfer to Rutgers, as you may have no choice but to do, I don’t doubt that you will do well. And your family will claim that all the good things happened because they forced you to transfer, and there will be no way to prove that you would have done just as well from TCNJ.

There are a lot worse fates than transferring to Rutgers - it’s an excellent school - so I hesitate to offer what sound like condolences… but I’m sorry that you’ve been put through all this stress and now the additional stress and disruption of transferring when you didn’t really want to. Hopefully you can stay connected to your TCNJ friends, since the two campuses aren’t so very far apart… although putting down roots and making friends at your new school is important too.

I don’t think you’ve ever stated your gender; if female, the Douglass Residential College and its programs and leadership opportunities could be worth looking into.

I hate to assume that the transfer is happening rather than arm you with solid arguments for staying where you are, but honestly it seems as if that ship has sailed; you’ve made all of the arguments already and the people who pay your tuition have not budged. I feel for you, and I really do feel that all this disruption is unnecessary, but if that’s what is going to happen, I also feel sure that you’ll make it work and things will turn out okay. I hope you’ll keep us posted on how it goes.

Sure sounds like it’s going to make a difference to you. And that’s what’s important. Stick to your guns! You’re an adult, so tell them to respect your wishes in this matter - just as they would expect you to respect theirs.

I don’t think that is going to work for this particular student and their family / culture.

OP, I am so sorry you are being forced to transfer when you don’t want to do so and when you are at a school where you are getting a good education and where you are happy.

Will you have access to a car so that you can continue to visit your friends?

And perhaps you can ask the faculty with whom you are currently doing research if they can recommend any similar labs at Rutgers and perhaps even write you a letter of recommendation or facilitate an introduction . If you explain why you are transferring , and that it is not what you want to do, they may be able and willing to do that.

Best of luck to you. I’m sure you will do well at Rutgers, even though it’s not where you want to be.

Update: I registered for courses at Rutgers and I am going to take:
Discrete 2 (Foundational course)
Numerical Computing and Analysis(CS course but no coding)
Calc 3(I want to do a math minor)
Intro to environmental studies
I feel that transferring to Rutgers would be a really bad idea because the courses that I would have to take in Fall 2025 at Rutgers are foundational and don’t offer me any sort of benefit. If I were to stay at TCNJ, I would be taking:
Software Engineering(Requirement at TCNJ, Rutgers doesn’t require SWE)
Computational Mathematics (Math minor but has coding)
Calc 3(Math minor)
Algorithms in Practice (Option course at TCNJ, helps with coding interviews)
Capstone(My research in computational biology; RNA folding)

If I go to Rutgers, I won’t be able to complete my math minor or take classes like Software Engineering without delaying my graduation.

Do you guys agree?

There are many reasons enumerated upthread why staying at TCNJ makes sense. Question is, will your parents support that choice?

If you have registered at Rutgers, hasn’t this ship sailed?

And if your parents want Rutgers so badly, I guess they can pay for an extra semester or year if you end up needing it.

I agree with Happy, you got lots of support here for your desire to stay at TCNJ, but if the transfer is a done deal, there’s no point dwelling on it.

If you have had this conversation with your parents already, and they are adamant, then validation from people here is moot. If you haven’t had the conversation… then validation from people here is also moot. Either they’ll reconsider or they won’t, and it seems pretty unlikely if you haven’t succeeded in convincing them before now.

Maybe better to start seeing the up-sides of Rutgers, and figuring out how best to achieve your goals there. It’s really a drag that you have to transfer when you don’t want to, but at some point the decision is made and you have to move forward.
