I am super bad in labs, but I want to be a pharmacist!

Most college labs have student work in small groups, not by themselves, in lab so it’s very likely you won’t be working alone.

OChem labs are multistep and often have complicated and or tedious procedures that have to be followed with precision. Physics labs require you to be able to assemble electronic equipment and then use it. Genetics lab required D2 to do lots of micro-pipetting and spend an extended period of time doing close observations of wasp behavior.

So lots of different skills involved in doing labs.

What was it you enjoyed about this particular lab–that you were working alone? That the procedure was repetitive? (Doing the same steps over and over so you had a sense of familiarity with the procedure?) That it required limited physical movement on your part?

I liked working alone because I didn’t feel that people were judging my awkwardness, since I’m awkward by nature :P. I also liked the repetitive procedure as it helped me get more comfortable with the procedure and by the time I was testing my third drug, I really had it in the bag. It was relaxing and I didn’t move often and the procedure was pretty monotonous, which I enjoyed.

Odd question, PencilCase–have you been evaluated by a physician or PT to see if you have some underlying physical or movement disability that might make you clumsy?

Just suck it up and work your hardest. You don’t have to be anywhere near perfect to do well in a lab class. I definitely was not the best, but I was able to get by and make it to medical school.

Both my mother and sister-in-law are pharmacists and they don’t do anything lab related in their actual careers–most pharmacists don’t (sometimes you have to make solutions/IVs, but even the technicians can do that and actually are usually the ones who do it).

Haha WayOutWestMoM, I’m just rally shy and insecure  I’ve been bullied a lot in school and in work and one time in the mall. In school, I got bullied by younger kids and had to get my younger sibbling to stand up for me and at work I was harassed by an older man and targeted by a jealous manager. I live in an area where I am the minority, so I am defined as “weird looking”. I’m just overly aware of all of my actions and feel that everything I do is wrong which I hate and that’s why I’d rather read a textbook and take a test because this way I am judged by a number and not my skills.

@Wayoutwestmom Idunno where you’re getting your information because when i took chem at my cc we worked alone, and one of my friends at a UC was talking about how she does labs alone too.

Call your college and maybe make it a priority to go a place where they have the funding to afford each student to work on their own (if cc’s and UC’s can do it, i would think almost everywhere would). And even partner would be better i think.

Working on your own isn’t a matter of funding. Some professors like having students work in groups.

I want to play this game too!

Let’s see:
Gen Chem - 1 partner
Organic - on your own but you had a “buddy” to share reagents with
Physics - groups of 4
Biodiversity - groups of 3
Genetics - groups of 4
Ecology/Evolution - groups of 3-4

In med school:
Anatomy - group of 4
Cell Bio - group of 4
Histology - one partner
Clinical skills - group of 10
