USC was a reach for me even before when I had 2 C’s (Chem Honors and AP US Hist), but I got a C in AP Econ first semester senior year. If my EC’s, recs, and essays are good (2130 SAT) but I have a low GPA (3.5 UW, 4.1 W before this semester’s grades-probably 3.4, 4.0 now), would you still say USC is probably out of the question or wait-list at best?
I know it’s kinda hard to tell without all the other specific stats-but just a guess.

Im in the exact same position as you- GPA is sort of low for USC, but test scores are good (30 ACT) and I assume my essays/recs/EC’s are alright, but I got one C+ this past semester. I still managed to have a 3.9 weighted for the semester, but I got that one bad grade which might be killer. I was skimming through the USC Fall 2011 Decisions thread, and to be honest, it doesn’t look like either of us have that great of a chance. All of the kids who got in had 2250+ SAT’s and 4.0’s…but then again, they all qualified for scholarships so they are at the top of the applicant pool. Hopefully USC doesn’t think too badly of our C’s and we get an acceptance letter in March!

you guys might not have as much to worry about as you think, USC doesn’t have a waitlist, instead they accept students for spring semester. check out last year’s stats- the ones more towards the end (march), they might make you feel a little better! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/852880-stats-only-usc-decisions-2010-a-4.html

Thanks! I appreciate the response-and the other thread does make me feel a little better. Not gonna get my hopes too high though since it’s so competitive this year.
Hoping that since the C’s were in Honors and AP classes, it won’t look as bad.

I got two Cs (IB Physics and AP Calc BC) junior year that I raised to Bs and I’m currently a very happy Trojan. :D

Hey guys, I know someone who got in with four C’s. So nothing’s impossible. :p

I’m applying to Annenberg with several C’s (76/70 for a year of Honors Alg, 70/76 for a year of Honors Geometry, 79 for a semester in Honors Chem and 77 for a semester in AP Art History)… My counselor and I explained the extenuating circumstances that surrounded the grades, but even so I can’t help but feel as if those grades have screwed over my entire app. I am not expecting too much but I’m hoping by some fluke the rest of my application (which is relatively strong) will be enough to get me spring admission I would literally be the happiest person on Earth if it did, but once again, I can’t really expect much. Good luck to everyone! Maybe we’ll all get lucky :)

Guys, chill out, no need to get paranoid over a few Cs. I was one of those who received notification of admission early and a Dean’s scholarship, and my GPA was about a 3.83UW, 4.11W, and that includes a C I got in Calculus BC last year along with about 3 or 4 Bs in other classes across the years… And for the record, I received a 2060 on my SAT, so if you’re in the 2100s, a C or two isn’t going to make or break your application. The admission officers understand that sometimes we slip up and that we’re not perfect, so an occaisional C isn’t going to kill you. Besides, grades are only one part of the application. In the grand scheme of things amongst your ECs, reccomendations, and numerous essays and responses, a few Cs aren’t going to completely change their mind.

(Just try not to get any more…)

I think you still have a decent shot.
