So I applied to ALOT of unis in UK and USA because I’m the paranoid type, and I’ve got into my two main ones (UCLA and King’s College) and I really want to go to either of these. However I also got a $23,000 scholarship to the University of Miami, and now I’m feeling the pressure to go there because it will save my parents a lot of money. I just really really really don’t want to! I’ve been dreaming of King’s Colelge and UCLA and they are what motivated me to do well in my A Level and SATs and I don’t want to settle for Miami. I don’t know how to tell my parents this and not sound like a spoiled unappreciative little brat someone please help me!! Anything you have to say! This is stressing me out so much
You left out relevant information.
What is the cost of attendance (tuition/fees/room/board minus scholarship/grants BEFORE loans)? How much will you/your parents have to pay out of pocket? How much loans will you have to take out for each?
Have you been to Univ. of Miami?? its a great school and florida is really nice. you may want to go onto the UMiami site of CC and ask some people how they like it. Maybe you will change your mind.
There was some reason for U of Miami to be on your list in the first place, or you wouldn’t have put it there. Go back through the thinking process that you were using at that time, and do your best to remember what those reasons were. You also need to work through the reasons why UCLA and King’s are at the top of your list.
Then sit down with your parents, and run the numbers for all of your options. I like this calculator. It is written for US students who have been admitted to places in the US, so some of the lines won’t relate to you situation: http://www.finaid.org/calculators/awardletteradvanced.phtml
$23,000 is a serious amount of money. You need to know just exactly what the differences in costs for all four years (is King’s three years?) of study at the various places where you have been admitted is likely to be and what those cost differences can mean for your family.
I have to agree, U of Miami is a fantastic school. We have visited twice, and it would probably be my first choice for my son, if it were affordable for us. However it looks like he may have better offers elsewhere, and the cost of attendance is a huge factor for us, so he probably won’t be attending. But I’d choose Miami over UCLA any day, based on what I know about both schools and cities. Have you visited these schools and the surrounding areas? I don’t know anything about King’s College, so can’t comment on that, but I do know that if you have your heart set on a particular school, and your parents are willing to pay for it, that school is definitely a front runner for you, and your gut feeling about fit is a very important factor. If there is any way for you to visit the schools, I would highly recommend it, as you may like Miami much more than you think! Perhaps you could narrow it down to just King’s College (your top choice) and Miami (parents’ choice) to make the decision easier? Best of luck!
You know you’re on CC when someone is upset at the idea of possibly attending U of Miami.
Are you able to afford UCLA or King’s College? You can only afford what you can afford. You may have to attend Miami if you don’t get enough aid from the other two. Just know that Miami is a dream school for many students and is a GREAT school on its own merits. You’ll get a quality education there.
@minohi
I know, right??? LOL.
To the original poster, this is really a very good problem to have! You will be attending a great school, whether it’s your dream school, UCLA, or Miami. Honestly you can’t go wrong!
Wow. I think you’re the first person I’ve heard from who has not liked the University of Miami (FL, right?) whether they ended up going there or not. When we visited with youngest son it seemed pretty darn nice and would easily beat out your other two schools to us. He never ended up applying there as he wanted a school ON the water so ended up at Eckerd, but definitely liked it from our visit.
Have you visited the school? What about it didn’t you like compared to the others?
IMHO, King’s college would be a wonderful opportunity!!! Any parent would love to have this dilemma with their child
I am a bit confused here. Are we talking about King’s College in the UK or USA? If the Kings’ College in the USA (PA), wouldn’t the Tuition (net Scholarship), be the roughly the same for University of Miami and Kings College? University of Miami Tuition and Fees runs around $46K, with a COA of approximately $63K ($40K after accounting for $23K Scholarship), while King’s College COA around $46 - 49K. UCLA COA will be ~$59K per year, which, without any form of scholarship, would be the most expensive option.
OP, are you getting any Scholarships from UCLA or King’s College? If you should attend UM, what would be your major?
Also there’s another King’s College in NYC. Not sure if that’s the one you meant but either way, please let us know how your finances works into this as a factor.
U of Miami >>>>>> King’s College London.
U of Miami + 23k >>> UCLA (full cost)
While I agree with what the other posters are saying, I can understand why you wouldn’t want to go to Miami. Just talk to your parents about it. If they can’t afford it, then that’s different, but it sounds like you’re just worried about talking to them. Don’t worry about being a spoiled brat - this is how you’re going to spend the next four years of your life, and if you have a really strong preference it is worth voicing.
