I GOTTT INNNNNNN OMGGG!! I GOT IN - now whattttt what do i do!

Sorry I Got Your Message Just Now

I Couldnt Open It Though…

I M From Repulse Bay…hong Kong Island

has anyone in yr place got admitted to chicago already?

erm I know two ppl who got in already, it came thru UPS. Plus, tmr’s public holiday, so you’ll prolly have to wait til wednesday

To Freak, sorry, I don’t know.

050596, the two ppl are from HK rite?

yea one in tai tam and one in sai kung

Congrats Silver! I got a waitlist letter through regular mail (postmarked the 29th). I think Chicago’s a much better choice than Barnard. Hey…all future UChicago people from Hong Kong…maybe we can hang out in Chicago…I might be going to Northwestern, and that’s pretty close.

don’t make this a prestige battle, becuase Chicago definitely wins that but this is about YOU!

barnard barnard barnard! it will offer a more multidimensional experience!!! and you’re a multidimensional person. you’re not just an intellectual that ONLY thinks and talks about intellectual topics with an intellectual mindset. and do you REALLY want academics to be your only priority and your college experience to be defined by text books and a boring social atmosphere?

what about your desire to keep DANCING (does u of chicago have a dance program?)-- and the cross-registering at Columbia? Your art history focus!New York City (mind you Chicago is an amazing city too with tons of art etc…) but NYC still beats Chicago on many levels. You are interested in journalism too right? NYC has more opportunities on that front too.

U of Chicago is an amazing school and be proud that you got accepted. It’s a wonderful accomplishment, but I really hope that you end up attending Barnard, becuase I think U of Chicago suits a different type of person.

Congrats, silver!!! I got in too! The wait is finally over!!

I feel so torn, just like you. I got into Stanford the other day, and now I’m in at Chicago. Yesterday I was all excited about going to Stanford because I was losing hope - Chicago should have sent their letters earlier!!! BIG MISTAKE! Now I’m confused again and I just don’t know what to choose. Flip flops or snow boots?

Dilemma aside, the package was beautiful. It was huge! And the paper they used was super - it just felt so thick, so real. And the books! Although I did read the online version of Chicago Life ages ago, so there wasn’t that much excitement over that.

i don’t know what to do…
there’s just too many things to take into consideration…
i’m most likely flying out to chicago this thursday night… i’ve never been there… i know it isn’t wise to do so because i live so far and i have IB final exams in 3 weeks… but i think i really need to…

do u guys think this is wise?

sorry guys (on the first page) for not answering to your posts… i was doing some other things even though i was “online”.

the package came from UPS… and it’s a HUGE BOX… a proper BOX… in like a cardboard boxx… ive never seen anything like it.
my mom messaged me when i was in school… i was just amaazzzzeddd. she was going off to work and it came…
all the other acceptances so far have just come in packages from DHL or fedex etc… but this was a hugeee boxxx lol
ok i’m over the box now…
yeh anyway… thank u so much everyone for ur lovely words.

i truly am torn… its kind of 50/50, sometimes more towards barnard and sometimes more towards chicago.
i was actually gonna apply to chicago EA and had my school references etc sent by that deadline, but somehow i just procrastinated and applied RD.
i do have to say though… i love barnard mainly because of my immensely intense (lol) love for NYC… and my former top choice was columbia.
would u reckon that i’d be “settling” if i chose barnard. i thought i wouldn’t be but what if i am.
and i do like chicago but dont really know too much bout it… and over these past few months convinced myself that its not for me cus ive heard that its the nation’s “geek school” and what not…
but perhaps im wrong…
i dont know…im so torn.
im going to visit chicago this weekend though…

silver, I thought you applied ED to Barnard?

I know how you feel though, I really do! I have no idea what to do. I don’t give a darn about the prestige, it’s really the setting and weather that’s making me lean towards Stanford now. I’m nervous about moving into a city like Chicago after living such a sheltered life, and I don’t think I’ll survive the winters - I live in a bloody desert, darn it.

no nkay, i applied ED to columbia and didn’t get in.

i applied to 10 places RD and got into 6 and waiting for 1. but really it’s between barnard and chicago.

one of my good friends is going to stanford, she got in EA… 2 other people from my school got in stanford RD. i think both will go there too.

well i’m from a country with 4 seasons but i’ve lived in the tropics almost all my life… but i’m totally chuffed about going to a cold place hehe so weather’s not a factor for me.
in fact i chose to go to the east over the west coast… just like the east coast better.
i know chicago’s not quite in the east though…
these things will have to weighed out…

oh and i’m also wanting to hear people’s opinions on this… i personally don’t like the thought of a transfer but just wanna know how possible it is and what people’s views are on it:
going to chicago for one year and transferring to columbia… what do u think???

Silver,
congrats on your acceptance! I think that it is very wise of you to visit; Chicago is one of those school where you will either feel that you belong - or not. Being on the campus, sitting in on classes, talking to students will give you a feel for it.

nkay,
congrats on all your great options, too. I don’t want to downplay the weather in Chicagoland, but have you looked at the list of events on the UChicago website? Just fantastic - all sorts of things going on. I wish I could attend. Best wishes with whatever you decide upon.

To those still in limbo -
I hope that your packages come soon - and are large and impressive ones!

Congrats everyone! Well…silver…i dun think it’s the greatest idea to visit Chicago right now…like you said, the IB people have their exams coming up. I totally regret spending my entire easter holiday fussing over college decisions…I guess now I’ll have to study my butt off. But if you do end up going, i hope you’ll have a great trip!

hahahah, I know that you wanted to go to Chicago deep down inside. Nobody freaks out like that unless they truly want to go to Chicago (like I did). I personally am excited as heck about going to Chicago because I want to major in economics; their program is second to none. You just need to ask yourself and push all outside opinions out.

Just bear in mind that I will know exactly who you are in Chicago if you attend because you’ll be speaking in acronyms like “lol” and “rofl.”

Congrats, Silver! Just something to think about, but Chicago and Columbia are actually quite similar. Both have classical core curriculums, great philosophy departments, and are in urban settings with fairly intellectual kids. Transfering is actually quite difficult to do and the acceptance rate to colleges when you transfer is actually LOWER than high school to college admissions. As I have both friends at Barnard (and live fairly close, in NYC) and friends at Chicago, and am planning to attend, I’d say that you really can’t go wrong with either. However, the complaint I hear most often about Barnard is its smallness and that one really has to use Columbia in order not to have a very limited menu of options for classes and extracurriculars. My friends say that they sometimes feel a little hemmed in by the very intimate atmosphere there. Chicago is a larger institution, and a research institution. There are obviously other differences and similarities, but that’s something to think about.

one thing to keep in mind is the unfair but nonetheless pertinent issue of being looked down on because you tried for columbia and weren’t accepted. even though barnard is a quality school in its own right, plenty of columbia girls look down on barnard girls who accepted the school as a second choice behind columbia. if what you really wanted was columbia, then chicago will give you a similar core and a similar caliber student body, whereas barnard doesn’t have a core (only distribution requirements) and is decidedly less selective than both chicago and columbia.

Sarahbara - do you mean you’re going to attend Chicago or Barnard?
This decision is a really important one obviously, and I don’t want to make a mistake.
I guess I’ll be happy at either. And once I’m at one place, there’ll be no turning back to the other.
And I’m pretty sure I’m going to visit Chicago soon. But don’t know if Barnard can be put on the schedule… Do you think only visiting one would me partial, and not be able to make the “right” decision.

Brine, just going to ignore any comments you make from now on. I just hope I won’t have to bump into these types if I go there.

To be frank, my only worry about Chicago is that I’ll get “depressed” there, with the rumoured “lack of social life” and being at the place “where fun dies” etc. I mean these things are probably over exaggerated, but they must stem from somewhere…
And pretty much the only edge Barnard has over Chicago is that it’s NYC.
But I’m so confused and have mixed-feelings that I can’t make my decision… even after sleeping on it.
Ultimately I am the only one who can make the decision… but it’s just so difficult :(
