A social science major typically consumes about 35-45% of one’s bachelor’s degree course work. That means that the student still has considerable schedule space outside of his/her major. Of course, some of that schedule space may be restricted due to general education requirements, rather than being free electives (although if the general education requirements can be fulfilled by courses that the student wants to take anyway, that is not much of a restriction).
