I Have Six Days: UT (McCombs) v. Berkeley (Economics)

@Jpgranier oh come on. Miami is no where near the caliber of Cal, and really the only ones close are Michigan, Virginia, and UNC. UT Austin is a step below. Cal is equal to the likes of Rice, Northwestern, and Cornell in my mind, as they have the most cross-admits. UT austin is only good in CS and Business, but besides that is pretty meh. Vermont should not even be in consideration with cal. its insulting

Um, have you looked at the engineering rankings for UT? Not too shabby.

@MaineLonghorn yes I have. Still, its not compared to the likes of top non-ivys. Its compared to other top public schools.

Oh, I guess Civil Engineering, tied for #4, doesn’t count.

And neither does Petroleum Engineering, ranked #1.

Oh, and Chemical Engineering at #3.

Oh, I guess Computer Engineering is low-ranked, at #7.

@MaineLonghorn Petroleum engineering should be ranked number 1 because its THE oil state (texas). Who else would want to be a petroleum engineer. The same can be said Cal and Stanford NEED to be ranked highly in CS because the bay area is king for CS. Chemical engineering can be seen as similar as many properties of the oil industry need chemical engineering. Computer engineering is tied with CS, which I said was good. Civil engineering ill give you, but Texas always has construction

Good rationalizations. The rankings still stand.

I can tell you one person responsible for the civil engineering ranking - my dad, a National Academy of Engineering member and the first American given an honorary membership in the Russian Academy of Engineering. He just retired after 52 years as a professor at UT. He’s still doing research and speaking all over the world. He wasn’t a bad teacher, either - he got a lot of teaching awards.

That’s why I get a little hot under the collar when people say UT isn’t great for engineering.

@MaineLonghorn the rationalizations where meant to show how the rankings are the results of the state and the needs of the state, not due to the quality of the university

Who cares? Why is this even a conversation at this point? OP chose to stick with UT-Austin anyways.

@ANormalSeniorGuy you seem to be obsessed with overall ranking and prestige. That’s not nearly as important as the specific programs. Berkeley has an overall better prestige, but McCombs (where OP will be in) is a top rated business program, whereas OP won’t even be at Haas at Berkeley. And Berkeley isn’t certainly worth $160k over UT-Austin.
