I’m almost 60 years old and I don’t know how to shop for clothes

Yes, LasMa, I am another multi-compartment purse girl! It’s so hard to find them, and I hate the huge open bags that are everywhere. I love your bag, but it’s too small for me. I like to carry journal articles so I need room for a stack of 8x11 papers, and often a notebook or book. This is the bag I’m retiring:

Mine is tan; I bought it just as it was being discontinued and it wasn’t available in black. It has the triple-compartment configuration that yours does (large zippered pocket in the middle, open compartments on the sides), but each compartment is bigger and the shape is more boxy. There are two fairly large zippered pockets inside the open compartments, and an outside organizational section that opens completely. You can see all this in the photos. The bag is beautifully made. I’m replacing it only because the leather is getting a little worn looking (after some years of daily use with a lot of travel and no care).

If anyone is interested in a large, pale blue bag, with many, many compartments, this is a great deal.

Hey guys-- for us clothing designer challenged folks, can you minimize the abbreviations or acronyms? Who is EF?

I can actually supply this information, jym - it’s Eileen Fisher.

Kajon, I haven’t worn jeans since I was in my 20’s. Now that I am old and overweight, they would not be a good choice for me! But thanks for the suggestion.

Also, I own no jewelry. Not one piece. I never wore my wedding ring (plain gold band, no engagement ring) and I have no idea where it is now. I have no interest in jewelry and don’t understand why other people like it.

(Hopeless, I know.)

previous post says Eileen Fisher

Thanks. Didn’t see the post with the full name. And… true confessions… I don’t know who that designer is :-S

So many of you talk about how you covet your “black jeans”. Can I see a few links to the brands you like??? I would only purchase a somewhat skinny jean and preferably on the shorter side (ankle) - cropped not capri!

@LasMa -Wanted to let you know that you did, indeed, inspire me to go out yesterday and go shopping, which I hate.
Reading other posters’ ideas helped me buy another pair of black slacks, several bold, some even colorful! shirts and a black blazer/jacket. The latter would never have occurred to me to use with a sleeveless top and slacks. I am definitely clothes challenged!

abasket, I posted a link to mine the other day, it’s NYDJ. Mine’s full length but I’m sure they carry others.

I had a bunch of things altered several years ago and you can’t even tell (I mean, in the technique.) The one thing I’d advise (besides making sure it’s a good tailor,) is have them keep the labels in pants. Mine took them out and it’s a bear to figure what’s front and back on one slinky pair. Haha.

EF has been around a long time, used to make pretty, slim dresses back when many women were marching to the silly advice that we had to wear blue suits with little scarf ties. I love a suit, but am so happy we’re past that narrow faux rule.

Black jeans are really just jeans in black. Some will be the casual Levi’s fabric and some have a slightly different weave. In this case, imo, try for quality (a less expensive can be that) because sometimes a brand will fade. There are also jeans-styled trousers. I actually also have chino colored (I mean the off white canvas color) which are also versatile.

Remember when we used to send jeans to be dry cleaned? Loved the smooth result.

Btw, I don’t use a purse. I have some upscale shoulder totes and handy little stringy cross body pouches, but usually go without. My peculiarity. Don’t like to carry them. When I was in biz, I had a nice satchel type brief case.

@momof3sons Yay!!! That idea about sleeveless tops under sweaters/blazers never would have occurred to me either, but halfway through my first day, I really like it. The sweater sleeves fit much better, of course, adding to my new streamlined look, and it’s cooler.

@abasket

Ann Taylor makes a great black jean. The only one they have listed so far is the curvy, so keep checking their website as fall weather approaches. (though the curvy style isn’t too curvy - more or less means it doesn’t totally hug the underside of your rear end)

Gap Slim Straights might work for you. They are slim, but the ankle width has just a bit of excess fabric so they don’t look like a legging.

Banana Republic has a great skinny black:

All three of these companies seem to offer 30-40% off prices at least once a month so def worth signing up for email alerts.

Thanks @Kajon that’s what I needed to see - I wasn’t sure if people were talking what in my mind is a black “jean” - like the Gap pair you reference (which I could not do these - this color - black jeans in this way are not for me) OR more of a colored jean - in this case black - but a fully saturated black like the BR pair you link to - these, I could consider.

abasket, black “jeans” made of ponte fabric feel like leggings yet look more pant-like and can be worn like jeans.

I love these (this expensive brand fits my butt well, fortunately or unfortunately):

The Ann Taylor pants linked above is what my shopping-challenged friend ended up getting. She liked them so much that we turned back and got her a second pair in dark navy!

Abasket- I like these black jeans. They are called a legging but they fit like a skinny jean.

Whew, not what I had in mind. Those are ultra skinnies, ankle jeans or or leggings… More like this but mine aren’t Levi’s and I think in the pic she has boots on, which throws off the calf look. http://www.levi.com/US/en_US/womens-jeans/p/115180055

If you ever meet me, I don’t have a 19 yo’s body.

You all really have that sort of thigh gap? And slim hips? Maybe we’d better not meet. Haha.

I ordered a pair of high waisted Paige skinny jeans from the Nordstrom sale and I love the way they look. I have an athletic, curvy shape and I’m 5’7" and I can wear these with tall boots, booties or platform sandals. I have many Lucky Brand flowing tops that are longer that I can wear with these in the summer and in the winter I can wear with many of my long colorful cardigans. I also have a pair of similar black jeans from Nordstrom that are their Kut brand. Skinny jeans are not just for skinny builds! I ordered a 29 in the Paige jeans and a size 8 in the Kut brand. I have not had any luck with the NYDJeans. When my D was working at Nordstrom I tried on so many pairs of them and didn’t care for the fit. I also have a pair of J Brand higher waisted jeans that fit well - no muffin top hanging out over the sides!

Looking forward- we all have our challenges body wise. I happen to have no hips but I also have no waist and no butt. If I didn’t have a stomach I would be straight as a board, no curves on me. I also have a curved lower spine and rotated hip which makes my waistline not even. I need pants that have a rise that falls lower. NYDJ are super uncomfortable on me in the waist but look great on other people.Skinny jeans look best on me. Like Showmom I tend to wear a top that flows. I also like a long cardigan.
My D got me to try the AG jeans. They don’t fit super tight and are really comfortable. I was doubtful but they look really good on.The most important for me is that the waistband has stretch. Due to my uneven waistline I find I need a wasteland that gives.
I also have a pair of EF boyfriend jeans that have a slightly higher waist.
The best is to go somewhere that has a variety of brands. Be willing to try on a lot of different brands and styles of each brand.

@Lookingforward - My post on black jeans #230 to @abasket was geared toward her desire for a skinnier jean. They look great on some people, but I personally like a modern fit straight leg - something you can wear out at night with a group of 50-60 year old couples, to work or while traveling.

I will have to check out the ponte jeans when the weather gets a little cooler. Bootcut would not be my choice, but I like some of the skinny ones posted. I’ll check back with you all in October!!
