Are we taking nominations for stupid post of the day? Maybe you think they are sickly because they aren’t 40 pounds overweight?

I had been told by friends to shop at Aldi for staples to save money, but I’ve found that on bulk items, ShopRite has better prices and if you shop the sales/store brands at Wegman’s it’s much, much cheaper.
I have a question. So many of you have mentioned meat at Whole Foods or other supermarkets. Do you really buy your meat mostly at a supermarket? No butchers in your area? I can’t imagine that. Our local butcher shops are fresher and much more cost effective.

Butcher shop? Wow. I thought they were extinct. You’re lucky. Please don’t tell me you have full-serve gas, too. ;)

Yep. Full-service gas too. I have no idea how to pump gas.

Our local butcher has wonderful quality but very, very expensive (double).

We don’t have butchers here except the ones work for the supermarket.

Only the local halal butcher but they’re really expensive.

We have a couple of butchers nearby (one kosher, one not) and even a fishmonger. But they are all very pricey.

Hey there have been a few food threads lately. Wegmans is it. Wegmans will leave the wallet feeling whole, not Whole Foods…

I will agree to the previous posts on Wegmans. Whole foods is garbage compared to Wegmans. Wegmans is some sort of food paradise. The first time my husband and I visited Wegmans was in upstate NY in Auburn NY and the selection of fresh berries and cooked foods was to die for and being it was upstate NY it was actually not expensive at all for what we got, much much cheaper than any big chain store in the city or in california where i am from.

When we went to Wegmans in Jersey, closest to the city, it was much much pricer, but still, there is NO OTHER store i have ever spend over an hour in with pleasure.

Whole Foods is too expensive and doesnt have anything that I can not get elsewhere for 1/2 the price.

I agree about Wegmans. What a pleasure to shop in that store. Great prices. Lots of local food. Good ownership and respect for employee’s, too. Since moving from Ithaca, N.Y. I now realize how good we had it in central NY.

Well, our local Whole Foods must be realizing the cost of things–for Valentine’s Day they are offering 2 dozen roses for $19.99. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me, but I don’t know, maybe many other places are doing this also? I don’t recall them doing this before now–maybe they are making efforts to combat the economy?

Too many WF shoppers look like this guy (click to enlarge) ;-)

Our closest grocery store is a Whole Foods. I am too lazy to drive out of my way to go the store, so I mostly shop there. I’ll shop at any grocery store I happen to be driving past.

Whole Foods’ house brand, bulk products, and in-season fruit are competitive in quality and (IMHO) price with any other grocery store. I also buy the obscenely expensive cut-up fruit for my husband who likes to snack on it, because that way he snacks on fruit instead of cheez-its. I mainly find I save money because I don’t waste food because I don’t buy more than I need and what I buy tastes good.

I think it depends on the WF’s store. The one near me is very nice.

I suggest you look for Wyman’s frozen blueberries. They are Maine blueberries–the lowbush, wild kind–and generally much more flavorful than the big soft New Jersey/Michigan highbush varieties.

Consolation - thanks for the suggestion - I will definitely check that out.

Was just in WF today to pick up something for lunch. Based on the reactions on this thread, I took a stroll through the whole store and the prices in general are wildly expensive. I did manage to pick up some interesting gorgonzola, a bottle of imported beer (since H is having knee surgery today), and a couple of avocados on sale for 99 cents. Oh and a few heads of garlic, since the quality of garlic is dreadful at my local supermarket. But I don’t think I could afford to do my regular weekly shopping at WF. I pretty much peruse all the circulars, clip coupons and only buy whatever’s on sale each week. Fresh vegetables are our only splurge.

WF doesn’t even carry a lot of the things I regularly use - my tastes are move mundane I guess.

Re Butchers…I used to shop at a local overpriced butcher, but stopped when I found out both he and our local WF got their beef from the same supplier as my Costco. (Gibson Farms) …Thats Mel Gibson. Before she passed away, Julia Child commented in an interview with Bon Apetite that Costco and Lobels in NYC had the best beef available. I only serve beef once a month, but when I do I want something gooood.
