I "Went Crazy" at the College Bookstore

I have 2 W clings on “my” car… One for each W school attended by the members of the Bunsen clan, both acquired at the respective school’s gift stores.

Other than that… not much shopping done at those stores, but we are swimming up to our ears in Husky stuff! Around here, owning purple and gold or red and white items of clothing is a must. We get our Husky fix at Costco!

My DD attends Saint Marys Notre Dame, a sister school across the street from the University of Notre Dame, with a very small, all womens student body. Saint Mary’s College has forever existed in the shadows of Notre Dame’s historied tradition of excellence and a rabidly loyal alumni that bleeds Fighting Irish green. Not to mention the national ad Notre Dame gets every Fall for 12 weeks via its football program while Saint Marys is not even a blip on the radar. We love UND and are proud to be a part of the ND family, however peripherally. So in addition to buying Go Irish gear, my favorite item at the Saint Mary’s bookstore is the tee shirt that asks, “Where’s Notre Dame?” And the answer in the back of the tee says, “Across the street from Saint Mary’s!”

We looked for wears with the school name in smallest letters, hopefully with the first letter of the school name only. If it is a symbol of a “dog” only, it is even better for us.

The “loudest” T-shirt we (actually our child) have ever got is a free one that the school gave every admitted student. It has both the class year and the full school name printed in BIG block letters/numbers.

I think both our kid and we rarely wore clothes with the school name. He did wear it at school occasionally but have almost never worn it when he came back from the campus. I think there is a chance that my neighbors only knew he went to an OOS college and even did not know where. (You can tell we are very “anti-social” – but it is not the case that our neighbors “hated” us because we would always greet each other in a friendly way when we ran into each other. One reason may be that their children were much younger than us, like a high schooler vs a preschooler.)

Just thought of this:

We did have our share of “retail therapy”. It was actually a even more full-blown therapy but it was in another shape and form.

We packed 6 large “airline-check-in-sized” baggages, flied to campus much earlier than the move-in day (OK, a part of the reason was because of the pre-orientation) and stayed/shopped in the city where the school at for a grand total of 10 days, to make sure that DS would not lack anything before we left the campus, scout every inches near campus to make sure where is “safe”.

We left the campus and headed home later than almost all other parents even though we arrived at the campus earlier than almost all other parents!

Who would be crazier than us?!

@mcat we did the same thing and none of our friends could understand why we would spend a week in South Bend, Indiana lol. But we did pretty much everything you did too.

Talk about retail therapy, we honestly couldn’t bear leaving her a million miles away from home so after we went through the college stores we cleared out the local stores too. South Bend is home to Notre Dame and has a humongous, double decker Bed Bath & Beyond, and we went so beyond! Everything that didn’t fit in her six suitcases we shopped for there and at the Super Target. I didn’t even know that Super Target existed until then. Also, we scored when we figured out Walmart there carries Fighting Irish everything so we outfitted DD from rainsmocks to hand chillies to go with her season football tickets. DD was on campus for pre-orientation activities so we were in town way before everyone else too, and while she was at school events we went to the Amish towns for more souvenirs haha. We are stocked up on lace doilies and horse and buggy fridge magnets :).

For what we spent that week we figured we could have had a nice vaca in Maui haha but we loved it and if we could’ve stayed longer we might have.

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry SalveMater! Thumbs up!

I bought a car sticker and nice Columbia zip fleece last (freshman) year. Picked up a keychain bottle opener and pen for free at a local parents/alums club gathering last winter. Not too crazy.

Planned to get a t-shirt and ball cap this year, but our drop off was very disorganized and rushed yesterday and we left having forgotten to stop by the bookstore. Will probably buy online soon.

I really wanted a cycling jersey but there are $75 so I passed.
