Ideas for mom's 50th birthday please!

A birthday cake is a grand idea. I rarely have had a cake made for me. Growing up in a large family with a divorced Mom who worked I don’t remember to many homemade cakes. My birthday fell during the school year and my older siblings were to busy to make a cake. My oldest sister did make cakes for my siblings who had summer birthdays. (hope it doesn’t sound like I am whining)
This yr I told my husband that I would like a cupcake from a bakery I like. My youngest who is the only one at home did not like the cupcake idea and wanted to get a Baskin Robbins ice cream cake. My husband said no Mom wants a cupcake. My D replied so what I like ice cream cake. They got the cupcake.
Plus for me having my birthday come not long after getting everyone settled into school and a few weeks before my son’s birthday I often forget it is my birthday till a few days before.
Your Mom will love that you have thought of her. We spend so much of our time taking care of all the other family members that we don’t take enough time for ourselves.

Picture of you and your sister is a WONDERFUL idea for a 50th birthday present for your mother (a woman turning 50)

Here is what NOT to do! With my wife’s 50th birthday approaching I jumped on the opportunity to get an artist signed print by a very famous artist. I had the artist sign it, Happy 50th (my wife’s name) and I was soooo proud of this present. The print promptly disappeared and only recently was discovered… about 5 years after her 50th birthday. So you see, some women don’t like having their “50th birthday” widely advertised, even if it is on a nice fancy artist-signed print!!

For my sister-in-law’s 50th, I got 50 small Hersey bars (not the smallest–they were the ones about 3 inches long). I picked out favorite bible verses and printed them on colored paper and wrapped them around the bars like a second wrapper. I put them in a glass canister. She put it on her desk at work and could get a treat and some inspiration at the same time. Favorite quotes work, too. Relatively cheap, but require a little work. It was appreciated. There are rounds stickers you could use on the small peppermint patties, but you can’t print as much on them. I’ve done those with just an encouraging word.

I just got back from shopping! I got the frame, some good quality photo paper, Some wrapping paper, a nice card, and the cake mix. I’m making my own cream cheese frosting. :)

Thanks for all the wonderful ideas!!!

PS. I would have done a picture of my brother, sister and myself, but I have absolutely NO pictures of the three of us except from when I was about 2 years old. :(

She’s going to love it!

Oh, the difference between 13 year old sons and college daughters… My son was away at a summer camp, totally ignored mine… I also notice how husbands get bigger, better surprises- has to do with the planning. I still remember my older sister arranging cupcakes on the counter for my 40th birthday- there was a note “welcome to the” above 4 T’s spelled out in the cupcakes. I remember knowing my sister and I weren’t about to get our mother what we knew she wanted eons ago- cigarettes.

The photo and cake sound great- it truly is the thought that counts. We mothers know time and money are limited in college. The other big gift you are giving is spending time with her.

Just mention to her several times thru the day that you love her and always will. It will melt her heart and she will remember it forever much more than any physical present that you can give to her.

be sure to get a picture of the the 2 of you with the cake!

The cake is sitting on the counter waiting to be frosted, and my parents are driving to see me as I type this!!! I can’t WAIT…I have Civic Engagement from 9:30-11:30 and then I’m going to frost the cake and decorate it. :)
