This Forbes article from earlier today suggests that small colleges may be optimal for the study of physics:

The best way to do this, of course, is via some sort of research experience, working under the supervision of a faculty member on an actual open question. This is, obviously, a difficult thing to provide on a mass scale, which is why I’m a big proponent of small colleges for STEM majors generally, and physics majors in particular [emphasis added].
