If I passed the Calc AB test with a 3, can I skipp to math 1b?

question in topic title.

Yes, you can if you are in L&S. If not, you might want to check the other colleges’ pages.

[AP Subject Credit for Math](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/faq/apmath.html)

Yes, you can, but I would not recommend doing so. Many people who choose to skip on 1A don’t do well in 1B. 1A is a good refresher and may even be challenging for you considering you received a 3 on the AB test.

Even people who get 5’s on BC can struggle in Math 1A.

If you can take Math 16B instead of 1B, I highly suggest going that route.

I heard the 16 series is sometimes harder than the 1 series because the professors aren’t as good. Is this true?

word, post #4.

@ abbccc that is sometimes true only because there are some 1 series professors that are easier and some 16 series professors that are more difficult. However in general, with regards to material, the 16 series is easier.

^^^^ a RARE exception. Don’t swap 1A and 16A based on this unlikely case. Look at the self-assessment tests and other materials on the math.berkeley.edu site that advise on which of the courses to take. They definitively place 16A as easier and requiring less math skill than 1A.

^I wasn’t going to. I was just curious.
But the self-assessment test didn’t really help because you either do bad and they recommend remedial math or do well and they recommend 1A.

no, some perform in the middle and the test will recommend 16A.

Both 16A and 1A require that you are well grounded in algebraic manipulation.
