If money was no object, what would you splurge on?

I’d like to just be able to beam myself past traffic. Many years ago, when my daughter was little, we were driving when she said, “Why do we drive to school when we could just beam ourselves there?”

If a ton of money fell into my lap I certainly would look for something worthy to donate some of it to. That being said, the things listed below are all about me, me, me.

A. At 7:30 every morning (ok, every other morning) a masseuse would show up at my house and work on my back.

B. A yoga instructor/fitness trainer would show up after the masseuse.

C. A nutritionist/chef would come each day to prepare healthy meals. Hopefully I would learn something by watching them but unfortunately I am not a natural in the kitchen.

D. I would buy one of the big old victorian houses on East Chop Drive in Oak Bluffs, MA, fix it up and tell every member of my family that (as long as they promise to RELAX) they are welcome any time. I see extended families sitting on those porches and think it would be wonderful to spend time with my family and all of the people that I love that way. My sister has not been able to take a vacation in years and she and her kids would be the first people that I would call. (The masseuse and chef would follow me there each summer, of course. )

Oh, one other thing…one of those deep Japanese styled soaking bathtubs.

Elleneast, I think (wistfully!) of the same! I have 6 younger siblings, all married, all with children; we live everywhere from Boston to Chicago, so a vacation house where we could ALL visit would be the ultimate splurge.

I live in a 100 yr old house in the northeast. I have a 1 car detached garage basically used as storage, so cars are just parked in the driveway. I would love to have a two or three car attached garage.

My wants are basic. Sure I would love a beach house. But I would just love not having to scrape snow and ice off my car every morning 6 months of the year.

A charming house in Italy with a view of the Mediterranean. Oh, and it must come with a man named Mario who will serve ros

A cleaning lady, for sure. And never fly coach again either. A chauffeur when I travel. A suite in every hotel I stay at.

Elleneast, where is the like button, especially letter D, East Chop Drive. Know it well!!!

Oh, and I have a cleaning lady, Just not a garage darn it!!!

Concert and theater tickets – lots of them. And reservations for nearby hotel rooms on the evenings of the performances because my husband does not like to stay up late and is even disturbed if other members of the household go to an evening event and come home after he is in bed.

I currently limit myself to matinees (because of my husband’s preferences) and to only two or three shows a year (because of the money). If money was no object, this would change dramatically.

I would buy a share in a small private jet. Not the whole thing because I would never need it, but a share because I am always on small planes and not that happy with the person sitting next to me.

And, I would buy the house two doors down from my best friend on Cape May Point. And put an enormous tub next to an excellent shower… in the outdoor shower area. Does this sound impractical enough? I would also have an enormous tub indoors for rainy days.

I want to be comfortable. Money buys comfort in my book. All the rest is langniappe.

Someone to take my shopping list…carefully shop for the items on it…bring them to my home…and put them ALL away. I hate the grocery store.

I like shopping for groceries. I hate schlepping them. I think this would be a great business for someone else to do.

Me too! Especially here in NJ where you have to bag your own groceries. By the time I load up the cart, pack it into the bags, pay for it, haul it to the car, load up the car, take the cart to the cart dock, drive home, unload the groceries . . . I need a nap to recover.

This sounds like the grocery shopping MOST people do…not unique to NJ. I’m not thrilled with the task either which is why I would hire a grocery “personal shopper” if money were no object.

Oh…and I’d fly first class domestic and at least business class internationally.

If money is no object, can one still, by definition, splurge? If you follow that logic, I would have to say not splurging is the ultimate splurge!

They really make you bag in NJ and other places? Here, they bag and generally ask if you would like help out to the car, too. On the other hand we have to pump our own gas!

Same here, roshke. I guess they trust us to pump our own gas, but not pack our own groceries.

I would quit my current job to start work as director of the private foundation I would set up. One of the first projects funded by the foundation would be construction and operation of a world-class child-care center in my hometown and another one in the community in which I currently reside. The foundation would also fund a variety of fun things – college scholarships, arts programs, recreation facilities and programs, small business start-up grants and no-interest loans.

I would set up a $1 million trust fund for each sibling, in-law, niece, nephew, and child. And I would plan wonderful vacations that I would invite family and friends to accompany us on. At Christmas I would send out a $1,000 bill to each person on our Christmas card list (along with a card, of course).

Beach house and lots of travel. Pay for professional school for kids. Renovate current house to my liking–wouldn’t take lots of money, mostly the kitchen. I’d give deserving family members a nice check or invest it for those who’d go nuts with the money!

Finally, I’d find the best, most promising cancer research team and give them a blank check to find the cure for this damn disease. And, if possible, remain anonymous! I’ve always loved the idea of giving money away anonymously~

A pied-

^ Funny that was exactly my reaction. I would choose Central Park West though 5th Ave on the East side would be OK too. Heck why not one on each side. Money is no object, right?
