My degree is accounting, I’ve always had a job but no passion for it. I would have gone into fashion merchandising.
I absolutely would not have stayed in journalism - I should have at least changed my concentration from news-ed to public relations. I also thought seriously about changing my major to history, which I love. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, I cared more about making those around me happy than about my own life and what I wanted to do with it and I’ve paid for it career-wise ever since.
I was an English major. I really wanted to do biology (botany). Also loved psych (would’ve done research, not counseling).
My undergrad degree is political science and I have an MBA. I teach accounting (28 graduate hours in accounting, though little of that applies to teaching introductory financial/managerial). I passed the CPA exam, but have had limited practical experience as my current job has afforded me much flexibility with my family through the years. I would still love to teach, but ideally would teach political science, specifically courses related to SCOTUS. Dream job alternative would be to be either Nina Totenberg or Dahlia Lithwick and to report on SCOTUS.
I was just talking about this with my kids this weekend as my DD struggles with what to major in next year.
I chose Meteorology, and wouldn’t change a thing, but I pointed out to her that if I had chosen ChemE I also truly believe I also would have been happy and successful. I also could have seen myself majoring in English and being a writer.
Choose one of the several things you are interested in and then make the best of that choice while being prepared to adapt.
