If you didn't get the email last night

My child got their package today in the mail, but no email. Admitted for Spring 2013 and was invited to do the Washington Mentorship Program in the Fall. Not sure why they do this? It says Washington Mentorship program takes 125-150 kids overall, yet acceptance letter from AU says that they had 17k applicants for 1575 spots at the University. So are we to view this as any sort of an exclusive program, or just a way to keep kids interested in the school once the first semester is over and some freshmen drop out?
