I'm doomed, please help. I need ~$45,000 worth of scholarships NOW

Often CC is the best option for a great start. Keep doing well and you may see a transfer scholarship. Remember, your degree only shows the name of the last school.

It’s American U, I’m expecting 45-50K per year

My only issue was my grades/score. I got into WP’s prep school, the only thing stopping me was DoDMERB

I’m not doing SEED, it’s not a good program and I CAN’T spend two more years living my family

@Nomak54 I understand you have an opinion about a program you’ve never been part of. The people I know who went through it would put their own kids through the same program. It’s part of the reason DelTech is so active in the state.
You’ve been given repeated consistent advice here for a couple of days now from a wide array of folks who are all trying to help you see the path forward. I hope you’ll read back through these pages. None of us has to live the life you do or has to spend any time living with your family. But I think a lot of us are here on this site because we’ve been through tough decisions and times ourselves and we can provide a little bit of course correction now that will prevent you from being $200,000 off course 4 years from now. Now figure out a path that moves you forward. I don’t know where your guidance counselor has been in all of this but somebody is missing in action there.

Then you won’t be going to college this fall. There is no way you will get $45,000 in aid. You won’t get $45,000 in loans without a co-signer.

You cannot afford to attend American University. If you don’t pay your fall bill, your classes will be cancelled.

Figure this out…but think about your decisions. You have to be able to pay…or you can’t enroll.

I came asking for scholarships and no one gave me any answers. You all have been very unhelpful

Posters are giving you the truth OP, I know it is hard to hear. There are no $45,000 scholarships, and you won’t be able to get that much in loans. You have to be realistic and move on to Plan B, which is an affordable college.

Or Plan C…someone upthread suggested a gap year, and perhaps getting a job and an apartment makes sense in your situation. Good luck.

@Nomak54 no one gave you a way to get scholarships for $45,000 on April 30…because, frankly, there just aren’t any that huge still available.

Plus your SAT and GPA are not sufficiently high enough to garner a huge scholarship award.

The best scholarships come directly from the colleges to which you are admitted. You didn’t qualify for a generous scholarship at American.

The best we can suggest is taking a gap year…and applying to colleges where your stats will garner large merit aid…but that sub 3.0 GPA is going to be an issue even with an upward trend.

There are no 45k scholarships at this point. Most local awards are small. When you did the NPCs, it would have projected your aid, roughly. Though it’s late, you could run them now and see.

What makes you say you expect 45-50k from American? Did you not get their finaid award letter yet? What did they offer you in FA?

Tons of kids can’t afford their top choices. Many either go where they can afford or take a gap year and try next year, better informed.

You’re not telling us if it’s 45k total or per year. Or how you think you can pay this back. We hear what you want, but unless AU suddenly offers you the $ you need, you fall short.

Sorry but it’s simple math.

You got into WP Prep School, not the same as getting into West Point. And then you were not qualified for a medical reason. You believe you will be medically qualified in 2 years - but that doesn’t guarantee you a stop 2 years from now at West Point - you would have to compete again with that year’s pool of new applicants. You also might not end up medically qualified at that point - you have not been given a medical deferment, so don’t treat it like you have.

You need to find an academic home for the next 2 years, If you are lucky, you will gain admission to a service academy after those 2 years, if you still desire that route - but remember that means 4 more years of school. SEED is an excellent option, designed for someone like you. Go to a community college for 2 years, and do as well as you can there - act as if that is 2 years at the prep school. Take classes and do well in them, and prepare physically. If you don’t want to do that at home, get an apartment, and do it on your own.

Large scholarships (not from the school) are almost impossible to find if you are looking a year in advance and have an impressive full resume. You are asking people to find you a unicorn right now. Many gave you the answer. It isn’t happening. You just refused to listen.

They’ve been very helpful, you aren’t accepting their well-meaning advice.

There are no $45,000 scholarships out there to get. If there were, kids with higher stats/grades than you would be first in line.

You have no one to cosign $45,000 in loans and you can’t take them yourself.

You can’t afford this school. It’s just that simple. I’m truly sorry, but that’s the hard reality you’re facing.

We all understand you are in a bad position, but to say ALL the people posting for your benefit are being unhelpful is ridiculous. I’m sorry to be blunt, but you are refusing to hear, or acknowledge, the truth: You can not afford your first choice. There is no scholarship magic waiting to happen for you. People have to apply to affordable colleges. Unfortunately, you did not. If you had come here months ago, we could have made you aware of your options.

On May 2nd or so, NACAC will publish a list of colleges that still have room for students. The issue will be getting money, but you can contact some and see. Meanwhile, it seems that if you can not tolerate your living situation any longer, you need to come up with a viable living arrangement. Start planning for next year.

You can also look at threads by @CourtneyThurston , who won a LOT of money from scholarships. She put in a ton of work to get them, and began that work well in advance of getting the scholarships. I wish you luck.

I don’t understand this statement. The cost of AU is about $64k/year. The largest grant I see on their site is $22k which leaves a net cost of $42k/year. So the $45k you want to borrow is per YEAR, not over 4 years?

We gave you answers, you just don’t like them. You can’t borrow $45k/year and there aren’t any outside scholarships that will cover that large a gap. What’s so terrible about living with your family?

I’m not looking for a “45K” scholarship. I’m looking for multiple scholarships that add up to 45K

DoDMERB specifically told me it will be two years until I’m considered clear, to which my counselor told me two things: I had to go SOMEWHERE to build my academics, and that in two years he’ll still be working there and remember my situation. I can’t say they’re guaranteed, but at least I have a fair shot

Yes, the 45K comes from per year, not over 4 years. I got $5,500 from the financial aid and I’m doing PLC which may bring it down a bit.

Oh by the way, it’s too late, I found a relative and begged them for the money. I sent the $400 for the enrollment that was due tonight. All I have to do is find the remaining $200 for housing

If you have difficulty pulling together $600 it sounds impossible to find $45000 (x 4).

You and your relative are now out $400. There is no scholarship tree at the end of the season that is going to rain $45k in scholarships on you.

You have to be talented and with great potential, given the WP prep and American acceptances. Seriously, you’ll shine at SEED, and that’s going to be a feat step forward for you. There is a lot you can do with this. I have family near Wilmington, and the program has made a huge difference in people’s lives. You are a prime candidate that can make a huge difference there.

At American, you will be scraping for money the whole time you are there and owe a veritable fortune, increasing with interest capitalization for years. Not worth it. Try to think clearly about this.

You’re not understanding what I’m saying. There’s no combination of outside scholarships available between now and August that will add up to $45k/year.

No, you need to find $22,500 per semester. With a 10 month payment plan that’s $2250/month every month starting in about 12 weeks. If you don’t have it, you won’t be able to enroll.

Average small scholarships might be 1k. You’d need 45 of them. And most are one year, non renewable. And already assigned to other kids, by now.

This is a jam, pure and simple.

There are no scholarships, at this time of year, that are worth $45K per year. This is what everyone is trying to tell you. You are right . . . . you are doomed. You need $90K for two years.

You can try some local/community Kiwanis-Type scholarships (but assume $200-500 per year). Start filling out 1000 private scholarship applications and hope that you get at least one. Also, most scholarships have timelines before you apply.
Your grades and stats typically have to be outstanding, even for a $100 scholarship, and, being the bearer of bad news, your stats are not worth $45K per year.

Your parents wont qualify for a large loan of $45K because your EFC shows that they wont qualify for that amount; any bank would view that as a bad risk.

There is no way you can pay back a loan of $45K in one year. You accrue interest the minute your co-signer signs that loan.

NO one will hire a non-graduate, with mediocre grades, at $45K per year. Believe me, all three of my kids worked part time jobs and barely made $6K in summer.
