Should the students pay for food during the 14 days?
@CottonTales
I’d say yes because they’ll have to pay for food no matter where they quarantine. But it shouldn’t be a huge amount because it’s probably a boxed meal of some sort. It’s not the all you can eat buffets the dining halls.
I think most schools are working with student to move in as needed, to figure out move in procedures and that’s a good thing, but I don’t think they should HAVE to have a free period.
It doesn’t cost a school much to let students hold over a day or two before thanksgiving break or at Christmas, but they all charge extra if you do have to stay over a break or don’t move out on time. They have costs for maintenance, for RAs to stay on duty, for utilities. Not totally free.
Hopefully most schools will end up allowing EITHER quarantine for 14 days OR provide medical proof of a COVID negative result at move-in.
So latest in how we are going to get my kid to school in NYS. He is going to fly up 2 weeks early to NJ and stay with my brother (who has a separate room for him) . We will be driving up and getting kid to school in NYS. We will be spending maybe 12 hours total in NYS. Anytime we leave the car we will be masked and practicing SD. In return we will be bringing my brothers kid to their college (since we have a truck) on the way back home. I do want to say that someone who lived not to the far from my son’s school offered to have my kid Quarantine at their home. This act of kindness just made my heart. Keep in mind that my kid right now never leaves the house and we are tightening up everything we do now being a “bad state”. never leave home without a mask. and limiting contact with people. We had planned a get together of 10 people a while ago and cancelled.
Also trying to see about testing where we can get results within 2/3 days before anyone leaves, understanding its just a snapshot.
In the coronavirus and school thread a poster just mentioned:
Dickinson College just walked back their earlier decision to bring students back to campus and will now be fully remote for the fall. Only students with a true need to be on campus will be permitted to live there. They cited Pennsylvania’s quarantine rules for residents of other states ,general uncertainty about the behavior of the virus, and testing that will take longer to produce results than they had been originally promised.
@vpa2019 Others might choose that route too if 2nd wave gets out of control in their states. This whole “a person can get infected TWICE two months later because antibodies die off or new strains rapidly spawn up” news is demoralizing.
@LimboKid
I’m certain there will be more to follow, especially if the ability to do testing efficiently and quickly is threatened. Personally I don’t see how schools can deliver on their testing plans when whole states are struggling with supplies and result turnaround times.
Fingers crossed the re-infection potential isn’t a problem. I do find it annoying when these sort of antidotal stories are published without actual studies supporting them. Not saying it couldn’t happen but no need to ignite panic ( at least not yet ?).
@LimboKid, I drove from CT to NY today, checked into a hotel with a DL and Plates from one of the highest Covid states. Had police directly behind me twice, once on the Interstate and the other for 2 minutes at a stop light. I didn’t get pulled over either time. NY isn’t out to “get” OOS drivers.
@CottonTales I’m confused… What does your plate say? Why would you be quarantined or fined if you are not coming in from a state on the quarantine list? NY-CT-NJ has always been in the same safety-bubble. Actually no state in New England is on NY’s quarantine list.
This is the latest NY quarantine list of 22 states: New Mexico, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Utah.
I have DL and Plates from one of the top 3 Covid states… I am just telling you the police are not stopping cars because of their plates. I have proof I have been in safe states for months if needed.
@LimboKid, Do you have any sources that report that NYS police are stopping out of state vehicles simply because they’re from out of state?
As I already said before, I don’t have a live report or personal experience of being pulled over for quarantine violations in New York state. I have also posted this before on this forum:
https://wyrk.com/police-could-stop-vehicles-with-out-of-state-plates-to-enforce-quarantine/
Like speeding tickets, I’m sure not everyone who was speeding got one in NY state. For example, I never in almost three years. But every single one of my cousins did. So, if the goal is to advertise @CottonTales singular experience as an example that everyone on this forum should just ignore what Cuomo said, please do as you please. Everyone’s risk profile is different. Speeding tickets are $45 to $600 in NY state. How many people have received $600 tickets? I don’t know any.
In my circle of family and friends, everyone says NY state cops more often than not pull over OOS plates. It’s great that your experience is different. But that does not silence my opinion.
I doubt that NYState police will be focusing on that. However, the rules are out there , and there is that risk of consequences if you violate them. I know for a fact that Sussex County, Delaware was aggressive for a while in keeping people from OOS out of their state. Now Delaware is on that NY NJ, CT list.
Apparently the 14 day “expected” quarantine in MA is being ignored by a lot of tourists. The news this evening was interviewing some people from Florida who were saying that they don’t need to quarantine because they were being really careful before they came up. They also expressed surprise at how everyone in MA was wearing masks. Also, Samuel Adams shut down its taproom because there were too many tourists from out of state going there. So much for honor system quarantines.
I’m not sure what this means for colleges as I assume they will try to comply but for anyone worrying about passing through or dropping off your kid, it seems that there really is no quarantine.
Then maybe you should quit insisting that that’s what’s happening here.
You seem to post a lot of random stories and personal opinion as fact with no evidence to back it up…
…And what you do link uses an inflammatory headline and only a single quote from an entire conversation that’s taken out of context. The governor’s point was that there are various ways people who aren’t quarantining might be detected. Routine traffic stops, business meetings with colleagues, and interactions with hotel staff were all mentioned. But the targeting of OOS cars isn’t one of them.
[ABC News](Coronavirus News: How the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut COVID-19 quarantine will work - ABC7 New York): Cuomo said there will not be a roadblock checking license plates at borders. “That is not a quarantine, that is a blockade.”
@austinmshauri “Then maybe you should quit insisting that that’s what’s happening here.”
Isn’t this an open forum? Don’t I have my Freedom of Speech? What am I insisting? My opinion that people should watch out what MIGHT happen? Sharing what I heard on the radio? What Cuomo actually said?
I insist that I’m risk-averse and warn people of what Cuomo said. Dr. Fauci just said over a dozen news channels including CNN that we MIGHT be looking at 100,000 cases per day if we are not careful and don’t wear masks… So Dr. Fauci should shut up and don’t warn people about what might happen?
Of course I’m not a professional like Dr. Fauci. But he and I share the same Freedom of Speech as fellow humans trying to warn other humans of dangers. Did Dr. Fauci personally witness 100,000 cases per day in a pandemic? Don’t think he personally witnessed the Flu pandemic of 1918.
I sincerely suggest the adults on this forum should start listening and quit shutting up opinions from younger folks. Maybe that way, they can develop a wider perspective to actually understand their kids more, instead of just blaming the internet or generation gaps.
@me29034 Oh no! No Sam Adams! My step-bro (MIT grad) will be heart-broken…
Sorry if this has been addressed but we know a CA student who will attend Syracuse (NY) in the fall. I heard that she will be flying into another state (PA?) and driving to her college to get around the 14 day quarantine. Is this possible and will they be checking IDs at the state borders?
@me29034
Quarantines are definitely honor system…too many people for official enforcement. We can barely seem to get a handle on contact tracing. That being said airports do offer the biggest opportunity for “enforcement “ and at a minimum money making via fines.
