Technically they do, but I would not provide details here. I can write books about issues. I was on zoom with Bon Appétit…
Omelet station closes at 9:15am and will not start omelet for you after 9. Good luck with 8 am classes and breakfast… and quality of watery omelets… And my DD is very good cook…so she knows what is good and all her friends complain about the same. Her roomate was on Zoom too. Food there is a disaster… The only way out is to get a dorm with full kitchen (very few) and reduce meal plan to 7 meals a week. You can’t drop it totaly even if your have food allergies…
Basically we are at the point of paying for food twice. You pay for meal plan and do not use it. Then your kid shops and cooks. (No uber eats or restaurants. )And only one tiny fridge per room. We had to get accommodation for two fridges!
Does your D’s school have a Hillel? At my son’s school the Hillel has been providing kosher for passover food all week. He said the 1st night seder was wonderful. And during the rest of the year they have two kosher meat meals a week (for Wed and shabbat). Are other Hillels not able to provide for the kids?
Yes she does. Hillel did not provide food. But Jewish federation paid for dinners at different synagogues in the area (if student wanted to go) and for Uber rides for 2 seders. The problem is you can’t find ride back (no Ubers in good part of the city at night). So you need a friend with a car willing to go with you (or bring you back) or you will not be able to get back to campus.
Hillel gave bags with a Mazza pack to kids, and some snacks plus plastic seder plate :).
We are extremely greatfull to local Jewish federation for their support.
Thanks for the info, this is definitely something I’ll keep in mind when looking for schools for D26. They need to be able to eat on passover week… it’s almost finals week!
Exactly. They have finals next week!
I also consider us very lucky with such supportive Jewish federation and chaplain. They made a huge difference for DD. We are jocking that this is the best religious (they are not officially religious anymore, but with religious core classes, you can’t avoid Bible there) school for Jewish kids
My D24 is a foodie so it was a consideration.
Most people get tired of dorm food at some point, so I suggested we look at how many restaurants are within a 10 mile radius of the school.
When she went to Iowa for the Iowa Young Writer’s Studio, she realized that she didnt want to go to an environment with few choices. Those 2 weeks really helped her understand an important aspect of college life (for her) that she hadn’t thought about before.
We wanted to give her options if she wanted to go out with friends to eat at a variety of places and not just whatever’s on campus. Remote schools with just a few coffee shops and sandwich places were definitely out.
I don’t really care about food. I’ll find something to eat. I’m glad I don’t have to cook or do dishes. I hope I don’t have to walk too far. It’s going to be really hard to not drink Coke with every meal. That is my biggest concern-my willpower with soda.
When we were doing tours my son never mentioned food at all. I don’t think it mattered to him at all in the decision process
That’s surprising to hear about uber/lyft. IIRC your kid is in my metro area. We are in the suburbs but can pre-book an uber or lyft to pick us up if need be. Or maybe call an old fashioned taxi (though I have no clue what companies are till around).

Way back when, the summer between my Sophomore and Junior year, my college changed dining companies. Not a huge deal, the food went from decent to decent. But I’d hate to see a student select a college based on campus food, then have it change up to something awful.
D24 only had the opportunity to eat in the dining halls of three colleges, and they ranged from good to great in her opinion. On niche they ranged between B+ and A+, so the overall ratings tracked with her impression. Given how generous niche’s grading is, a C would have given me serious pause (are we talking food poisoning and animal droppings, rotten fresh food, little variety, multiple of these?). She committed to the A+ place with multiple convenient dining locations (not because of the food), but as long as the food was “fine” she also would have been fine.
We were lucky in that the food at one kid’s best school was fantastic, but they would have gone to that school no matter what, because of the academics. Other kid went to a different high academics school, and the food was horrible - and they still would have gone there.
But yes, I do think that the quality of the food and dorms should be taken into consideration.
Ahhh, Gumby’s pizza! I worked at a Gumby’s over the summer at another college. Thank you for bringing back the memory.
It wasn’t a deciding factor but it was noticed. And now that’s D22 is spoiled with amazing food at UCLA, I can say it’s made a big difference in her well being and quality of life. Niche rates the food an A+. (Is ranked #1 for food on Niche)
We had notably terrible food at Macalester. It gets a C+ from Niche.
According to Niche, the Culinary Institute of America is ranked #34 in best food.
Hmmm…
I’ve eaten everywhere at the CIA…and the food and service are amazing!
Is this the most damning evidence that rankings are unimportant.
Forget USNWR, down with Niche!
Yep!
Shhh – keep that on the down low, Spinnaker!
