Imsa applicant class of 2019

@rattybatty

Istugier, they want a lot of consistent students and not a lot of people on the rise. Especially since you go to a school in Naperville they expect a really high gpa from you in the ranges of a 3.9-4.0 range becuase of the opportunities. As far as your selection in 9th grade the highest you could get is a gpa of 3.8 which is good. In 8th grade I am going to tell you there is no absolute way that you are going to get in becuase the 8th graders they accept have to be perfect

You dont need a great application you need a fantastic, amazing, beautiful application a application that is going to make them remember for the coming years.

@rattybatty But its worth applying because they will know my name. Right? So in 9th grade I would have a better chance?

And, in 9th grade, pretend I may have a GPA of like 3.7, but my SAT score were both over 750. Would they kind of cancel out because one is below average while one is above average? @rattybatty

No you do not have a better chance by trying in 8th grade and then again trying in 9th grade. GPA is given and if you have a very low GPA like that you have a low chance, but if you can get your SAT scores to about 780 then you are fine, in 9th grade you will have a good chance with a good GPA.

@rattybatty Ok so pretend this year I have like that 3.5 GPA. But then I get a 780 on math and like a 770 on reading. Would this be ok? And in 9th grade pretend I have a GPA of 3.8 but my SAT was like 720 math 680 reading. Would that be ok?

Istugier well you could be okay with 8th grade but 9th grade you get those scores I do not know what to say, I think you can get rejected

Lol ok… I have to work my tail off now studying every second I have for the SAT. Do you have any tips on how to get a huge score in sat @rattybatty

For some tips on the SAT, your practice scores of 750 each are really great. You should study for both the old SAT and New SAT, but focus on the new SAT if you plan to take the SAT in January which I recommend. Use Khan Academy that always helps they made a personalized SAT prep based on your knowledge for the new SAT. Good Luck

@lsutiger25 Hi! First of all, it sounds like you’re freaking out about this. Don’t freak out! And don’t work your butt off for the SATs. You’ll end up tired, nervous, and won’t put forth your best effort on the test. Which isn’t to say you shouldn’t study at all, just don’t wear yourself out.

Going by the people I know from my class with high SATs, most of us were people who just knew the material really well, rather than people who studied a bunch. The math portion is basically just Algebra I, so practice d=r*t problems, graphing, stuff like that. Take some practice tests. For the CR portion, CollegeBoard’s website has practice problems that I personally found useful.

A 3.76 GPA, if you’re entering as a 9th grader, is still low, but isn’t horrible. Be sure you’re only counting Math, Science, and English grades, and a B is a 3, A is a four, etc. A-'s aren’t weighted differently than normal A’s.

The admissions people get plenty of applicants with >725 scores who are then turned down because their applications weren’t well-rounded. If I remember correctly, the average admitted 8th grader has a 720 math score. Also, you said that if you’re admitted as an eighth grader, you’d have skipped 3 grades in total, right? That would make you one of the youngest people admitted. The reason 8th grade applicants are not preferred is the age difference. That’s not to say you couldn’t handle the coursework, but it would probably be weird to adjust to residential life with people that much older. That, and freshman year of high school is awesome. You learn a lot freshman year, and I don’t mean that academically.

No I wouldn’t skip 3 grades. I’m in advanced classes that are all 2 grades ahead lol. Also does IMSA like if you did events by them. Because I did many of these.

@aminorspark @rattybatty

@lsutiger25 Oh. Pretty much every applicant is AT LEAST 2-3 years ahead academically. Fair amount of people are more. That said, not being insanely young will work in your favor. Rejoice? They have a portion on the application on what imsa related activities you’ve done, yes. Whether or not it actually matters is debatable. Plenty of people get in without ever doing anything imsa related. Same with the parent statement.

Hey guys. I was accepted to IMSA as an 8th grader so let me know if you have any questions about app. Process.

My application looked liked this

4.0 gpa(never gotten lower than that in my life)
700+ sat (bad writing score, they are looking at that now which sucks)
Teachers like me and allow me to advance in class.
Awards are good went to nationals in robotics and quiz bowl. And many state awards. I am currently playing JV tennis as captain.
I have attended science@imsa
I live in cook county lemont
I am Indian

@YoloSwagMaster Is straight A’s really mandatory to get in as 8th grade in your opinion?

A 4.0 gpa is a very good addition to your application. If you don’t have one, I would try to make other aspects of your application stellar. You really need to translate your love of Math and science in the essays and show maturity in them as they want the 8th graders to be mature. Don’t get stressed about the application too much. I don’t recommend going as a schmen, try as an 8th grader but go as a 9th. @lsutiger25

Heyyy everybody I’m applying as a shmen. I just finished my practice sat and got 630 reading and 500 math(idk my writing score) so I have a lot of work… I also got Cs during 8th grade so that’s kinda bad(although I got back on track in the end) so I have a pretty low chance unless I get 650+ on math and get straight As, along with having good teacher recs and essays as a freshman, which I think I can do. I also saw someone who got into IMSA with I think 490 Reading and 510 math so that’s reassuring. I’m also a double minority, going to a crappy highschool and stuff so that’ll help…

But anyway I’ll stop typing my life story now lol

Isutiger, you’re gonna have a hard time making it in as an 8th grader cause of you’re GPA but if you have good essays, teacher recs, etc you can probably make it. If you apply as a freshmen and get straight As and stuff, I think you definitely have a good chance.

Oh did anyone go to SEAMS or Integrated Science this year? Also anyone going to EIP?

Were you at science@imsa?? @caressmytoenails
How are you applying as a schmen when your done with 8th grade???

I’m applying as a freshman and if I make it in I go as a sophomore.
Oh and I wasn’t at science@imsa
