My school has a system where you get a grade each quarter. Does IMSA only look at your grades per semester?
@XxSwegLordxX I called them and they told me they look at quarter grades to calculate GPA. My School also has quarter grades.
They average it for the year, so it is easier to maintain an “A” grade if it is graded per semester, not per quarter.
I’m not necessarily looking at an HYPSM school, I think I’ve already accepted me not getting in to any. I’m going to still work very hard but idk. I’m leaning more towards UChicago and Northwestern Medicine. Do they have a good acceptance rate from IMSA? I was thinking I could research at northwestern so it would look good on the application
I learned from what the senior we know at IMSA has heard, this year had fewer acceptances at most of the top 10 schools than in the past classes. The notable exception was Harvard. She knew of a couple of acceptances. There were no acceptances last year. She also said that there is a handful of students who did really well this year and had multiple acceptances at top ten schools. @Bamboolong is correct, research is no longer just imsa’s domain. At the science fair last year, I heard more winners from the Niles high schools and Stevenson than imsa.
Wow, but the reason I would go to IMSA is to get an opportunity in research that Niles, IMSA, and Stevenson has. So that doesn’t really worry me. My high school doesn’t have that.
@YoloSwagMaster - good for you! Makes the choice easier for you. If I get accepted it will be a difficult decision. I will have to continue gathering data. Who will be at SciOly this weekend? Then Math State on May 7 then Science Fair on the 14th? We will probably know the decision by then.
@survivorfan1. I’m going to state in mathletes on May 7th. I was accepted to the science fair on the 14th but I have an ROV international competition at NASA at the same time so I will be going there since I have invested much more time in it.
I think I asked this question, but I will ask it again. What is the point of going to IMSA if I already will be attending Neuqua next year? Neuqua is a pretty good school in Naperville. Since, the education is really good at Neuqua, is it worth going to IMSA. Like, would I be better off at Neuqua than IMSA?
@lsutiger25 If I was you, I would stay in Neuqua… but it is just me. My school has 25% math proficiency, yours - about 85%. But if you want to get away from parents, go to IMSA
@lsutiger25 I know neuqua doesn’t rank but where do you think fall at neuqua? If you are not near the top I’d go to imsa. Even if you are not at the top at imsa you will get opportunities that may not be available at neuqua since you ar not near the top and you will get an a bit of an imsa bump for college. But in the end if I were you i won’t listen to others and decide based on my research and gut. You know you so you do you.
@survivorfan1 so if I am at the top of my low expectations school, should I stay or should I go to IMSA? I want to go. My chances to college acceptance might be better at my home school, but it is so boring there…
@javascript go if you want to be challenged and have oppurtunities most students don’t have at normal schools. Don’t base your acceptance on colleges.
You know you can still be challenged in college which matters more than high school. That’s why college acceptance matters.
@priyaluvsbooks, @survivorfan1 thank you for your suggestions, really appreciate it, will be thinking and thinking… In a mean time today I got invited for Summer@IMSA Science Camp!!! (was on a wait list…) Will go to IMSA for a week in Summer!!! :D/ Andybody from here going there? July 10-15?
@javascript I think I may be a group leader for that one this year! That’s exciting!!
@javascript.
I went last year and it was soooo fun! The dorms were so fun to hang out in. I still talk to all the friends I made there
@priyaluvsbooks This is fantastic! Will see you there! @YoloSwagMaster Good to know, I am so glad I got a chance to go! <:-P
Acceptance rates from IMSA vary a lot from year to year given how small the school is- here are the numbers from students from IMSA’s past 3 graduating classes who applied to the University of Chicago (from Naviance).
First column is number of students applied, while second is admitted and third is enrolled.
2015 33 7 4
2014 38 4 0
2013 46 8 4
Don’t put too much stock into the statistics- while many people think that applying to college is a matter of being “lucky” (in this case, being part of University of Chicago’s chosen 10-20%), there are clearly applications that stand out. Focus on developing one or two passions in particular that really reflect your personality, rather than trying too hard to be “well-rounded”.
As quoted in a recent email from IMSA, “Selection committee meets next week and we are excited to pick our next class of Titans! Best of luck to all of our applicants.”
I’m literally going to die
