India, What to do

I am debating that he purchase travel insurance.
Do the world travelers find it necessary for Travel Insurance or is the risk small enough and current PPO medical insurance is enough? DS says that he will have access to the infirmary. DS also plans to do some traveling within India with his classmates+professor.

Ah! Tiger years… When the Brits were in India, they used to kill tigers for game. This was banned probably after India got independence.

Ivory is banned now as well. There still exists some pretty good wild life if you wish to see it. You would have to go for a safari to ‘Sunder bun’ though. Sunder means beautiful Bun means forest. There is a small safari place by Bangalore also. You could ask your S to enquire at the Travel agencies located in Bangalore. One can purchase a short safari package which includes to and fro transportation.

Regarding the health insurance, I believe PPO covers it but I have never had to use my PPO outside of US as yet. Just FYI - I just heard this week (!) on NPR that Harvard medical school has just opened a branch in Bangalore and in Bombay. I won’t be surprized if HMS accepts US PPOs in B’lore given that it’s a US branch. Here’s the link to it.

By the way, mini - the tall naked statue at Sravanabelagola is that of Mahavir.

Mahavir was born a Prince (like Buddha) and gave up all materialistic things to lead an ascetic life. Actually he founded a religion (which is an off-shoot of Hinduism) that is sort of similar in a way like Buddhism, called Jainism. People who practice this religion are so extreme in non-violece that they do not even eat anything that grows below the ground (potatoes, onions, peanuts etc) because they feel that they would be killing soil organisms in the process
